How to troubleshoot Galaxy J7 that’s stuck on Verizon screen

When it comes to being stuck while booting up, it’s often the firmware that has an issue and that’s what we have to assume in this troubleshooting guide. After all, the phone has been working fine prior to the problem, according to our reader. Now, take time to read the problem below so you should know how it occurs to others…

Problem: Hi guys. I have the prepaid Galaxy J7 I bought from Verizon. So far, the phone has been working find until recently when it refused to boot up to the home and instead got stuck on the screen that says Verizon. Called my provider about it but the representative failed to fix the issue that’s why I’m reaching out to you as you may be able to help me. What can I do about it? Thanks guys.

Troubleshooting: The course of our troubleshooting would be to determine if the problem is caused by apps or if it’s really a firmware issue. That being said, here’s what you need to do about it:

Step 1: Try to reboot your phone in Safe mode

If your Galaxy J7 can successfully boot up in this mode, then it’s clear enough that the problem is caused by one or some of the third-party apps you installed. In this case, the problem is a minor one and it can be fixed by simply doing something about the app that might be causing the problem. Here’s how you boot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

Assuming the problem is caused by a third-party app, you can try to update the app you suspect, clear its cache and data and even uninstall it if the problem remains. Here’s how to do all those things…

How to update apps on your Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Play Store.
  3. Tap the Menu key and then tap My Apps. To keep your apps automatically updated, tap the Menu key, tap Settings, and then tap Auto-update apps to select the check box.
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • Tap Update [xx] to update all applications with updates available.
    • Tap an individual application and then tap Update to update a single application.

How to clear apps caches and data on Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap MORE > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  8. Tap Clear cache.

How to uninstall apps from your Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

If the phone still gets stuck on the Verizon screen even if you’re trying to boot it up in safe mode, then you should do the next step.

Step 2: Attempt to boot your phone up in Recovery mode

One thing is for sure in this problem; the phone cannot boot up successfully. You’ve tried booting it up in safe mode but failed, so, in this step, try booting it up in recovery mode. It’s just another Android environment  but unlike safe mode, the interface won’t be loaded in this mode. Even if your phone currently experiences a serious firmware issue, it may still be able to boot up in this mode successfully as it’s a fail-safe environment.

It’s important that you try to do this as there are a couple of things you can do in this mode that may just bring your phone back to life; you can wipe the cache partition and do the master reset.

How to reboot your phone in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition

By wiping the cache partition, you’re actually deleting all the system caches corrupt or not. Once the deleted, they will be replaced with new files once the phone reboots after the procedure. Assuming the phone got stuck on the Verizon screen after an update, then this procedure is very effective and this is how you do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If you can boot your phone up successfully in recovery mode but wiping the cache partition didn’t do something good, then you should do the reset. It might be able to fix the problem but you will lose all your files and data so it’s your call if you proceed with the procedure.

  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the problem still persists after the reset or if your phone failed to boot up in recovery mode, then it’s time to bring it to the shop and let the tech handle the problem for you.
