How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note 8 with a touchscreen that doesn’t work anymore
As long as your device doesn’t have signs of physical and liquid damage or hasn’t been tampered with, then this problem could be just due to a firmware issue and you may be able to fix by doing the procedures below.
First solution: Reboot your phone
If this is the first time that this problem happened then it could be just a minor issue with some apps or the firmware. A normal reboot may be able to fix it. Or better yet, perform the forced restart procedure to refresh the phone’s memory and reload all its apps and services.
To do this, press and hold the volume down button and the power key at the same time for 10 seconds or more. Your device will reboot like it usually does but after which, try to see if the touchscreen is working properly already. If still not, then move on to the next solution.
Second solution: Run your phone in Safe Mode
By doing this, we’re ruling out the possibility that this problem is due to a third party app or service. There are times when third-party apps and games may cause the touchscreen to not work properly and rebooting the phone in safe mode will disable all third parties. So, if the touchscreen works perfectly when in safe mode, then it confirms our suspicion that it’s caused by a third party app. You may only need to close the app after using it by closing all recently used apps and that could be end of the problem. So, try to run your phone in safe mode by following these steps and see what happens…
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
- When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
If the problem continues while your phone is in safe mode, then you should troubleshoot the firmware.
Third solution: Wipe cache partition
Sometimes performance and hardware issues are caused by some corrupt system caches. By wiping the cache partition, you’re deleting all cache and replacing it with new ones. If the problem doesn’t occur after that, then that’s good. Here’s how you do it:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
If the touchscreen is still not working after this, then move on to the next solution.
Fourth solution: Master Reset
If all else fails, then you should reset your phone to know if this is a firmware problem or a hardware issue. This will delete all your files and data and since you the touchscreen no longer works, you may not be able to make a backup . However, it’s necessary at this point to determine if it can be fixed by a reset because if not, then it’s probably a hardware problem and you need to bring it to the shop. Here’s how you reset your phone using the hard keys…
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
