How to fix Galaxy S10 update issues

Update issues on Samsung Galaxy devices can happen for a number of reasons. This short troubleshooting guide will show you the steps that you can try if you encounter a problem after an update.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #1: Restart device

There can be many forms of update-related issues in a Samsung Galaxy device. If you are experiencing a problem after a system update has been installed, it may be caused by a minor bug. Some temporary bugs are easily fixed by simply restarting the phone. We suggest that you restart your Galaxy S10 first before you do the rest of the solutions below. Hopefully this helps in fixing the problem.  It’s particularly useful when the cause of the problem is a temporary bug that may be coming from a coding bug that develops after the device has been left running for some time. Soft reset simulates the effects of “battery pull” procedure. It clears the system and the RAM so if the bug is coming from memory leak or inefficient coding, this may help. To do that, simply press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds

For some Galaxy S10 5G, there may be a slightly different way to arrive at the same method. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 12 seconds or until the device power cycles. Note: Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. Note: Utilize the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Allow up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.
  3. If Maintenance Boot Mode screen won’t show, then your device does not have it. Simply wait for the device to power down completely.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #2: Refresh system cache

If your Galaxy S10 update issues started after a system update, it’s possible that there might be a problem with the system cache. This is a set of temporary files used by Android to load apps quickly. Updates may sometimes corrupt the system cache, which can then cause slow performance problems and other issues. To ensure that your device has fresh system cache, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #3: Reset network settings

Some post update issues on Samsung devices can be caused by incorrect network configuration. At times, new updates may change network settings, which, in turn, may lead to problems. To fix Galaxy S10 update issues due to incorrect network setup, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.
  3. Tap Reset settings.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #4: Reset app preferences

Resetting app preferences is oftentimes overlooked in many Android troubleshooting articles but when it comes to an issue like yours, it might help a lot. It’s possible that one or some of your default apps may not be set correctly, causing this glitch to occur. Because there’s no way to know if this guess is true, what you need to do is to simply ensure that all default apps are turned on. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  4. Select Reset app preferences.
  5. Restart your S10 and check for the problem.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #5:  Boot to safe mode

One of the common reasons for Android troubles is not the system or updates to it but apps. Updating your Android system does not necessarily mean that apps are updated as well. At times, this can be problematic as poorly coded apps may interfere with Android after an update. If you haven’t found the solution to your Galaxy S10 update issues at this point, consider checking if a third party app is the cause. To do that, you need to boot a device to safe mode. Here’s how:

  1. To restart to safe mode:
  2. Press and hold the Power button until the Power off window appears then release.
  3. Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  4. To confirm, tap Safe mode.
  5. The process may take up to 30 seconds to complete.
  6. Upon reboot, “Safe mode” appears in the lower-left of the home screen.
  7. Check for the problem by using your device as you normally would. Do this for as long as you can.

Remember that third-party applications are disabled in this mode so what you can use are pre-installed apps. Once your S10 5G has booted to this mode, make sure to check if the problem continues. Uninstall the app you recently installed and see if that will fix it. If the problem remains, use the process of elimination to identify the rogue app. Here’s how:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your S10 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #6: Factory reset

Usually, the most effective way to fix update issues is factory reset. Be sure to do it if the problem remains. Learn how to factory reset your device with these methods:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data and remove your Google account.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Scroll to and tap General management.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Select Factory data reset from the given options.
  6. Read the information then tap Reset to continue.
  7. Tap Delete All to confirm action.

Method 2: How to hard reset on Samsung Galaxy S10 using hardware buttons

  2. Also, you want to make sure that you remove your Google account. If your problem prevents you from doing that, then simply skip this step.
  3. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Bixby button at the same time.
  5. While still holding the Volume Up and Bixby keys, press and hold the Power button.
  6. The Recovery screen menu will now appear. When you see this, release the buttons.
  7. Use the Volume Down button until you are highlighting ‘Wipe data/factory reset.’
  8. Press the Power button to select ‘Wipe data/factory reset.’
  9. Use Volume Down to highlight Yes.
  10. Press the Power button to confirm factory reset.
  11. Set the phone up but don’t install any app.
  12. Use the phone normally and see if it overheats.

Galaxy S10 update issues fix #7: Install updates

Sometimes, the best way to fix update issues is to install the latest system update. Android is complicated system and there are millions of possible points of failure in it. New system updates may sometimes not work according to plan so developers like Google, Samsung, or carriers may release another update to fix the bug with the previous one. If nothing will change after a factory reset, it’s possible that you may have a system bug that may only be fixed by a new update. Be sure to install the most recent update to fix your issue. Otherwise, consider having the phone checked by Samsung. Visit your local Samsung store or Service Center for a fix.
