How to Transfer and Use Custom Notification Sounds on Galaxy Note 3

We did receive a lot emails complaining about their Samsung Galaxy Note 3 not playing their custom notifications. A few had actual problems while many just didn’t know how to use third-party sound tracks as notifications. Hence, I feel the need to write a somewhat lengthy post containing instructions on how to make the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 play third-party sounds as a ringtone or notification.

First Things First

• You must already have the tracks you want to use as ringtones and notifications.
• They must be in .mp3 or .m4a formats, these are the only formats I’m 100% sure compatible with Android.
• If they are in different format, convert them to .mp3 or .m4a.
• You must have a computer and the original USB cable.

Transferring Audio Files

To transfer audio files using a Windows computer, follow these steps:

1. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
2. Tap the Status bar and drag it down.
3. Tap Connected as a media device and then Media device (MTP).
4. On your computer, browse through the directory where you saved the custom sounds, select the ones you want to use as Notifications and copy.
5. Now navigate through your phone’s disk drive and create a new folder, and then paste the audio tracks there.
6. Go back to the directory where you saved your audio tracks and copy the ones you want to use as ringtones.
7. Navigate back to your phone’s disk drive and paste the tracks there in the folder you created a while ago.
8. Safely remove or disconnect your Galaxy Note 3 from your computer.

Add Files to Notifications List

1. From the Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
2. Tap Samsung folder.
3. Tap My Files, and the All Files.
4. Navigate through the folder where you saved the tracks.
5. Tap and hold the file you want to add to the default notifications list until a green check appears next to it.
6. Tap the Menu key, and then Copy.
7. Tap Device storage and the Notifications folder.
8. Tap Paste here. The track is now added to your phone’s default notifications list arranged in alphabetical order.

Using Custom Notifications

To use the track you just transferred from your PC, follow these steps:

1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
2. Tap Settings and then the Device tab.
3. Touch Sound, and then choose Default notification sound.
4. Find and choose the track you just transferred and then tap OK.
