Solved Samsung Galaxy S9 Battery Draining Quickly After Latest Android Oreo Update

S9 Battery Draining Quickly After Latest Android Oreo Update

Problem: Hi. I have a Samsung Galaxy s9 that’s running on Android 8.0.0 on AT&T. I recently installed the Android 8.0.0 update and my battery has been draining super quickly since then. I did a soft reset and wiped my cache partition but that doesn’t seem to help. Please help!


Solution: When a phone undergoes an update there are instances when it will be rebuilding its cached data which will use up battery life. If the issue has been ongoing for a couple of days now then there’s a possibility that this is caused by old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process. This old data is causing a conflict with the new software version resulting in this problem. What you should do right now is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S9 Gets Hot

Problem: The screen flickers, it gets hot to the point the phone will quit charging itself when plugged in, it freezes when I look up things on the internet sometimes, it will take at least 2-3 minutes after turning it on to recognize that there is data service, my calls are spotty when I try to call someone, I have only had this phone for 4 months keep this in mind and all these issues occurred within the first 2 months. I do not have phone service right now due to these issues.

Solution: The best thing you can do right now is to remove the microSD card of the phone ( if you have one installed) then backup your phone data and do a factory reset. This way you will be able to check if the problem is caused by a software glitch. In case the issue still persists after the reset then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component. The best thing you can do right now is  to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

S9 Stuck In Samsung Logo

Problem: Hi, I’m on holiday in the UK (from Australia). In Europe, I picked up an Orange sim to use on my travels. Yesterday, I couldn’t seem to properly close Google Maps. I closed it but the voice prompts kept going. I did a soft reset on the phone and it would not start properly. When I press the power button, First,  I get the Samsung Galaxy S9 message. Second, that message disappears and the word Samsung appears with the animated oval around it. Third, the oval disappears leaving the word Samsung across the screen and little stars appear from behind the word. This is as far as the phone will turn on. The phone had recently undertone a factory reset (3 months). I then charged the battery successfully. I tried booting the phone into safe mode as per your instructions and after sitting at the Samsung screen for a minute or two, the screen went black, the phone vibrated (like it does when you power it up) and then the following message appears

Warning!

A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications.

If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume up key.

Otherwise, press the volume down key to cancel.

Volume up: Continue

Volume down: Cancel (restart phone)

Since I do not have another OS to install, I chose the “cancel” option. the phone then restarts, then goes back as far as the samsung with the stars screen as described above. I don’t see a message at the bottom of the screen stating “safe mode” I then tried to reboot the phone into recovery mode which it successfully brought up the recovery screen with the various options. As per your blog, I chose to wipe the cache, which I assume it did and restarted the phone where it ended up with the Samsung with stars screen. I haven’t tried the other options in recovery mode and have chosen not to do a factory reset as I need to get my contacts, photos etc off the phone. I went to a Samsung support centre in London but they wouldn’t attempt anything because they said it was an Australian phone and that they are not licensed to help and didn’t have the correct software or diagnostic tools. Their answer for everything is that “it is probably the motherboard” However, I don’t have confidence in their response. They just didn’t want to know about it, so brushed me off. Ideally, I’d like to get the phone working again. If that’s not possible, I’d at least need to recover my contacts and photos and possibly texts. I’m not back in Australia for four weeks so need phone and internet access while I am travelling and don’t have a backup of my phone.  What can you suggest please?

Solution: If you want to recover the data stored in the phone then your best bet is to start the phone in Safe Mode. What you should do first is  to connect the phone to its charger then let it charge. With the phone still connected to the charger start the device in Safe Mode.

  • Press and hold the Power button until the Power off prompt appears then release.
  • Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  • To confirm, tap Safe mode ( This may take up to 30 seconds to complete).

Once the phone has started in Safe Mode you will be able to recover your phone data.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should consider doing a factory reset from the recovery mode. Take note that this will erase your phone data.
