Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus went completely dead, turned itself off and won’t turn back on (easy fix)

We have readers who own the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus that contacted us about a problem wherein their devices reportedly went completely dead or turned off by themselves and would no longer respond or turn on. The screen are said to be black and unresponsive. The same is true with the buttons. Needless to say, those units seem to show that there is a serious problem with their firmware or worse, their hardware.

In this post, I will tackle those issues and we’ll try to determine the reason why they turned off by themselves so that we can try to formulate a solution that may bring your phone back to life. This isn’t the first time I encountered issues like this but as what I’ve always said, every problem is unique unless the issue is with the firmware. How to fix Galaxy S8 Plus that turned off and won’t turn back on

The following are some practical things you can do to try and fix the problem. However, i would assume that the integrity of the firmware of your phone remains intact which means that it wasn’t modified in any way. Had you tried to root or installed a custom ROM and this problem started, the only way to fix it is to flash the stock firmware. But if this problem started without any obvious reason or cause, then this is what you need to do about it:

First solution: Forced reboot

More often, this problem is due to a firmware crash wherein the phone becomes unresponsive with a black screen. Fortunately, such problem is very easy to fix and all you need to do is this:

  • Press and hold the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more.

The forced reboot will restart your device like the normal process but if you’re familiar with the battery pull procedure, then this is the equivalent of it. It refreshes the phone’s memory and reloads all app, services and core functions. Do the same procedure a couple more times if the phone won’t respond after the first try or you may try this:

  1. Press and hold the volume down button and don’t go of it yet.
  2. Now press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

The second method is basically the same as the first only that we’re making sure the power key is pressed and held down after volume down key because doing otherwise won’t give you a similar result. However, if the phone is still not responding after this, then the next solution might bring it back to life.

Second solution: Charge your phone and do the Forced reboot

After doing the first procedures and your phone is still not responding, then it’s possible that the battery has been completely drained. The thing about a phone running out of battery while you’re using it is that some hardware and firmware components may not be properly shut down and as a result, the device may crash. Naturally, a firmware crash is very easy to fix but you still can’t make the device respond if there’s not enough battery to power it up, right? So, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet. It is imperative you use the wired charger.
  2. Using the original data / power cable, connect your S8 Plus to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether the phone shows the charging signs or not, allow it to be connected to the charger for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Press and hold the volume down button and don’t go of it yet.
  5. Now press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  6. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

If the phone responds to this, then you may consider the problem as fixed but there’s still a guarantee that the issue may occur again. So, I suggest you backup your files and data and then reset your phone to prevent future occurrences of the problem:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

On the other hand, if the phone continues to be unresponsive after doing the second procedure, then you should bring it to the technician to have it checked as there’s always a possibility the problem is caused by physical and/or liquid damage.
