Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 that’s stuck on the logo after the update

We need to troubleshoot your phone so that we have a chance of fixing the problem without any intervention from a technician since it was working fine prior to the update. There is actually a big chance that we can fix this on our own and don’t worry a bit since all the procedures I suggested in this post are safe but effective.

Step 1: Attempt to force reboot your device

I understand the phone still powers on but won’t continue the normal boot for some reason. It’s possible that it’s due to a glitch in either the system or its hardware. Minor glitches happen all the time and this problem is one of its symptoms. Therefore, before doing anything, I want you to try to force reboot your device by simply pressing and holding both the Volume Down and Power keys together for 15 seconds. It may reboot normally or may still gets stuck on the logo but, at least, you tried.

If the phone booted up successfully, then problem solved, otherwise, we might be looking at a problem caused by some apps.

Step 2: Reboot your device in Safe Mode

There is no guarantee that  your phone would boot up in safe mode since it’s actually the same as the normal boot process only that third-party apps aren’t loaded or temporarily disabled. By doing this procedure, you’re trying to confirm if your third-party apps have something to do with the problem because if so, then it still may not boot up normally. This is the steps on how to start your phone up in Safe Mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. When Samsung Galaxy S7 logo appears, release the Power key and immediately hold the volume down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down key until it finishes its rebooting.
  4. When “Safe mode” appears on the screen immediately release the Volume Down key.

Assuming your device booted up in this mode, the next thing you have to do is find that apps that are causing the problem.

Step 3: Clear the cache and data of suspected apps

I know it’s easier said than done but if ever you have some apps that you suspect are causing the problem, then try to reset them one by one by clear their respective cache and data. If such won’t work, then I suggest you uninstall them.

  1. From Home screen, tap App icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications and Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and tap suspected app.
  6. Touch the Force Close button first.
  7. Tap storage.
  8. Tap Clear cache and Clear data, Delete.

Assuming you have hundreds of apps installed on your phone and you don’t have a clue as to which the culprits are, it’s best that you take time backing up your files and data especially your pictures and videos, and then reset your phone through the Settings menu.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

Step 4: Wipe the cache partition so system caches will be replaced

The caches created by the previous firmware may have already been corrupted during the update process but the new firmware still continues to use them that’s why the device can no longer boot up normally. In this step, you will learn how to wipe off the directory where all caches are saved so that they will be replaced with new ones.

Do this procedure if your phone failed to boot up in safe mode, if uninstalling apps didn’t work and if your phone is capable of booting up into Recovery Mode.

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Should this procedure fail to fix the problem, there’s no other option but to reset your device.

Step 5: Do the Master Reset to bring the phone back to its original configuration

At this point in time, a reset is necessary, however, you may lose all your files and data that are saved in your device’s internal storage especially if it couldn’t boot up in safe mode. So, it’s your call if you continue with the reset or let someone handle it for you but let me tell you in advance that when a technician checks your phone, he/she may reset it before performing other tests.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If the problem remained after this, it’s time you had the device checked by a technician.
