How to make unresponsive Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus respond again (easy steps)

If your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus stopped responding without any obvious reason, then it’s a firmware crash unless, of course, the battery was drained completely. Issues like this happen all the time and they actually seem like serious hardware problems because they’ll leave your device unresponsive with, more often than not, a black screen. We’ve been contacted so many times by our readers who have encountered this issue and fortunately, we were able to address most of them.

Depending on how this problem occur, you may be able to fix it with just one procedure and make your Galaxy S9 Plus respond again. I will share with you the solution that we’ve been using to make your unresponsive device respond again. At this point, however, I would assume that your phone hasn’t been dropped on a hard surface or got submerged in water for a long period of time because physical and liquid damages may also result to the same symptoms. There is this one solution that’s often very effective against this problem because more often than not, it’s just a firmware issue, specifically a system crash. It may seem like a serious problem but it’s not and with that being said, here’s what you can do to make your Galaxy S9 Plus respond again.

First solution: Perform the Forced Reboot

If your S9 Plus has a removable battery, then this problem is pretty easy to fix as  you just have to pull the battery out and the place it back in to make it respond. Such is the case with phones that have removable batteries but since your S9 Plus has a non-removable battery, a forced reboot should be done.

  • Press and hold the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more.

The forced reboot is the equivalent of the battery pull. It refreshes your phone’s memory by simulating battery disconnect and reloading all apps, services and core functions. This is the ultimate solution to this problem provided it’s not due to physical or liquid damage. However, if your phone is still not responding to this procedure, then try doing this:

  1. Press and hold the volume down button and don’t let go.
  2. Press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.

This is basically, the same as the first procedure only that we’re making sure the power key is pressed and held down after the volume down button because doing it otherwise won’t fix the problem. But if your device is still not responding to this procedure, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Charge your phone and do the Forced Reboot

Let’s not rule out the possibility that the firmware just crashed even if your phone didn’t respond to the first solution. It’s possible that the battery got completely drained and may have caused the phone to crash. The thing about letting your device drain its battery completely is that it may also lead to a system crash since some hardware components and services may not be properly shut down. In this case, you’re already dealing with two issues; first, a system crash that causes your phone to respond and second, drained battery that prevents your phone from turning on. So, here’s what you need to do about this issue:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet. It’s imperative you use a wired charger for this troubleshooting.
  2. Connect the phone to its charger using the original cable.
  3. Regardless whether your S9 Plus respond to its charger or not, leave it connected to its for 10 minutes or so.
  4. Now, press and hold the volume down button and don’t let go.
  5. Press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  6. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more but this time while the phone is connected to its charger.

If the problem is either a firmware crash due to a drained battery or just the latter, then your phone should already be booting up by now. If it remains unresponsive, then there could be something else that’s causing the problem. You may try booting up your phone up in Recovery Mode to know if it’s still capable of doing so and if successful, you may proceed to doing the master reset. However, if the device isn’t booting up in that mode, then it’s time you brought it to a shop or back to the store so that a technician can check it up for you.

Here’s how to reboot your phone in recovery mode and do the master reset:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
