A smartphone may have gone completely dead when it ran out of battery and so it refuses to power on. This should be considered among other normal instances especially if the device is already running on a low-level battery life. But if a phone suddenly shuts down even when the battery level is still higher than 20 percent, it’s a possible indication of a system issue that needs to be fixed. In most cases, the problem is attributed to software errors with errant apps as the culprit. The same symptoms can also occur when memory-related issues are transpiring on a device. Random shutdowns in mobile devices have been linked to system crashes that are likewise tied to memory problems. The worst possible trigger is hardware damage. This usually occurs when the device was accidentally dropped or exposed to liquid. But for new and high-powered smartphones like the Huawei Mate 10 Pro that’s going through a similar symptom, some workarounds can still be applied before rushing to a service center. Read on to find out what options to try on if ever you will bump into the same issue in which your Mate 10 Pro smartphone suddenly shuts down and won’t turn on.

How to troubleshoot Mate 10 Pro that would no longer turn on
To get started, try plugging your phone into a power source and then let it charge for at least 30 minutes. Should the phone have just run out of battery, charging it will fix the problem. Be sure to use the original (OEM) charger that comes with your device to make sure it’s able to charge properly. Other chargers may not be able to provide the right amount of power and thus possibly results to abrupt power consumption. If your phone is able to charge completely, then try to apply these subsequent workarounds to clear out software errors on the phone that might have triggered the battery to drain faster.
First workaround: End all background/running apps.
Background apps are applications you’ve recently used but not closed. These apps are in standby mode, still running and using up power. With multiple apps left running in the background, there’s a higher chance for your phone battery to drain faster as they add up to power consumption from normal usage. As remedy, follow quit or end all background apps on your Mate 10 Pro with these steps:
- Tap the Recent apps button from the Home screen.
- Tap the Active apps icon.
- Tap End next to your messaging app. You can also tap the End all button to end/clear all apps including your messaging app.
- Tap OK to confirm action.
After clearing all background apps, reboot or soft reset your phone to clear errant cache from the internal memory and refresh the operating system.
Second workaround: Check and review battery usage details.
It is also imperative to manage battery usage for your apps. To find out which from your apps is using the most of your phone’s total power, check and review the battery usage details on your Mate 10 Pro. Here’s how to access this setting:
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Device.
- Tap Battery or Battery Usage.
On the following screen, you will see the details of which app uses how much of your phone’s battery in a specific period of time. - Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap System.
- Scroll to and tap System update.
- Tap the button to Check for Updates. Doing so will prompt your device to check for updates.
- If an update is available, you will see the complete details on the following screen. To install the new software version, tap the Quick Update button.
Reboot your phone when the update is completely installed to prevent any apps from going rogue and to ensure that all new system changes are properly applied.
Fourth workaround: Reset system settings on your phone.
Invalid settings on the phone can also cause conflict to other system functions and it’s possible that the battery system is the one that’s afflicted. - Tap Menu then select Settings.

- Scroll down to the bottom and tap Backup & Reset.
- Select Reset all Settings from the given options.
- Then tap Reset all Settings twice to confirm.
Allow your device to complete resetting and restoring system settings to their default values. When the reset is finished, your phone will restart. By then you can set up and enable necessary features to use them again on your device.
Fifth workaround: Wipe cache partition on your Mate 10 Pro.
If your phone started to act up like this after installing a software update, then it’s likely due to data corruption. It could be an app cache or temporary system data that’s corrupted during the update. To fix the problem, wiping cache partition on your Mate 10 Pro can help. Here’s how:
- Turn your phone completely off.
- Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button simultaneously for a few seconds.
- When you see the Huawei logo, release both buttons. You will then be routed to the EMUI or Android Recovery menu with a few options to choose from.
- Press the Volume Down button to scroll to and highlight Wipe cache partition from the given options.
- Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
