For owners of Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 or earlier, the best thing you can do about this problem is this:

  1. Remove the back cover.
  2. Pull the battery out.
  3. Press and hold the Power key for a minute to dry electricity stored in capacitors.
  4. Place the battery back in and secure it with the back cover.
  5. Now, turn your phone on and it should boot up normally.

However, if you own the Samsung Galaxy J5 2017, then you cannot pull the battery out since the 2017 variant has a non-removable battery but you can still do something to simulate battery disconnect and this is what you should do.

Just press and hold the Volume Down and the Power keys simultaneously for 10 seconds. Assuming this problem is due to a system crash or any minor firmware-related issues and that there’s enough battery left, your phone should boot up normally and it might be the only thing you need to do.

Do this procedure at least a couple of times to make sure you’re doing it right. You may press and hold the Volume Down button first and without letting go of it press and hold the Power key. After trying it a few times and the device doesn’t boot up, then try doing this:

  1. Plug your phone’s charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Connect your phone to it using the original cable.
  3. Regardless whether the phone responds or not, leave it connected to the charger for at least, ten minutes.
  4. Now press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key together for 10 seconds or until the screen turns on.

Most of the problems like this that we’ve addressed in the past, this solution has always been very effective because phones that actually die without apparent reason is due to a firmware crash. However, if for some reason your phone won’t respond to this, then you can do a couple more troubleshooting procedures.

There are only a couple of things you can try to see if your phone would still respond, so continue reading below for some practical troubleshooting procedures.

Try running the phone in safe mode

This would mean to temporarily disable all third-party apps to rule out the possibility that maybe one or some of them is causing the phone not to turn on. I’ve seen cases wherein third-party apps cause the firmware to crash and leave the phone unresponsive. This is how to boot your phone up in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  2. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  3. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  4. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  5. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  6. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

Assuming the phone actually boots up in this mode, the next thing you should do is find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

Attempt to boot your phone up in Recovery mode

If successful, you can try wiping the cache partition and reboot your phone. If the phone won’t still boot up after that, then perform the master reset:

  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

How to boot phone in recovery mode and do the master reset

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
