How to fix your Huawei Mate 10 Pro that cannot send or receive SMS/text messages [Troubleshooting Guide]

Modern smartphones are equipped with a number of new advanced features and services. Nonetheless, all these may not be that pleasing if basic services like SMS or text messaging functions aren’t working. But such problems are inevitable and thus they happen at any time. Among the common reasons why you won’t be able to send or receive SMS or text messages on your smartphone is due to network connectivity errors. The same thing can happen if your account standing isn’t good as well as when an outage is occurring in your area.

Software problems on the phone including those that are inflicted by faulty updates, malware, invalid settings, and data corruption are also among other triggers to consider. In worst cases, hardware damage like damaged SIM card or busted network component is to blame. Below are potential solutions and suggested workarounds you can try on should you bumped into the same issue on your Huawei Mate 10 Pro, which is unable to send or receive SMS or text messages. How to troubleshoot Mate 10 Pro that can’t send / receive text messages

Before troubleshooting software errors that might have caused conflict with SMS functions of your Huawei Mate 10 Pro, check and see if your phone has network signal. You may be using your phone in a place that’s no longer reachable by your network towers and so, your phone isn’t getting a good signal. As a result, basic network functions like texting aren’t working. If your phone is getting a stable signal (1 bar, at least) but still cannot send or receive text or SMS messages, then try these subsequent methods to clear out software issues.

First solution: Soft reset/reboot your phone.

If it just occurred that your phone failed to send or receive a text message or SMS, then it may be due to a random glitch either on the messaging app or on the phone software. To clear this out, performing a soft reset or device restart is recommended. Doing so will dump cache and temporary data from the phone system, refresh apps and clears minor software errors. Here’s how to soft reset a Huawei Mate 10 Pro:

  1. Press the Power button for a few seconds or until the menu options appear.
  2. Select Power off option and then tap OK. Doing so will shut down your phone.
  3. After 30 seconds, press the Power button again until your device restarts.

Allow your phone to finish restarting and then launch your messaging app and create a sample text or SMS message to send and receive. Continue to the next solution if the problem persists.

Second solution: Clear cache and data on your messaging app.

It’s also possible that the messaging app is glitching and is therefore a bit erratic. In that case, you can try clearing cache and data on your messaging app. Doing so will clear errant cached files that might have caused conflict and halted the messaging app from sending or receiving SMS messages. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Go to the Main Menu.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Application manager.
  4. Select the All tab.
  5. Select your messaging app from the list of apps.
  6. Tap the option to Clear Cache or Clear Data. Choose Clear Cache option to clear cache without erasing saved data on the app. Choose Clear Data option to delete all saved temporary information on the messaging app. The latter option is necessary if corrupted camera app data are to blame.
  7. If prompted, read and review the warning then tap OK to confirm action.

Reboot your phone after clearing the app’s cache and data, and then retry sending and receiving sample text or SMS messages on your own device. If it still doesn’t work, then continue to troubleshoot.

Third solution: Delete old and unwanted messages from your messaging app.

You won’t be able to send or receive further messages if you’ve already exceeded the message limit. This is likely the problem if you haven’t set your device to automatically delete old messages when it reached a certain number before reaching the maximum number of messages. As resolution, try to delete old and unwanted messages from your messaging app with these steps:

  1. Open your messaging app.
  2. Scroll to and long press on the message you want to delete.
  3. Then tap the three dots on the far right.
  4. Select More.
  5. Then tap to select all the messages you want to delete.

To delete a single text message from your Huawei Mate 10 Pro, follow these steps:

  1. Open your messaging app.
  2. Then open the conversation in which you want to delete a text message.
  3. Locate the message and then long press on it until a message box prompts.
  4. Finally, tap Delete to confirm.

Clear the messaging app and then relaunch to see if it’s already working as intended.

Fourth solution: Update messaging app or phone software.

Installing update for your messaging app can potentially fix the problem if it’s due to some bugs or malware. Updates not only bring in new features but also offer bug fixes to clear the app from bugs and malware. To manually check for pending app updates, particularly for a third-party (downloaded) messaging app, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Play Store from the Home screen.
  2. Swipe in from the right corner of the screen then select My apps & games.
  3. If an update is available for your messaging app, you will see its name on the list. Select your messaging app from the list then tap the Update button next to it.

Wait until the app is finished updating then open your messaging app to test and see if SMS functions are already working.

If you’re using the stock messaging app, then try to check for new software update to download and install on your phone. Software updates may also contain the required fixes for errant stock apps. Here’s how to check for new updates on your Huawei Mate 10 Pro:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Scroll to and tap System update.
  4. Tap the button to Check for Updates. Doing so will prompt your device to check for updates.
  5. If an update is available, you will see the complete details on the following screen. To install the new software version, tap the Quick Update button.

Reboot or soft reset your Huawei Mate 10 Pro after installing updates to make sure all new software changes are properly applied and likewise to prevent any apps from going rogue.

Fifth solution: Reset network settings on your phone.

Resetting the network settings can also be the key to fixing the problem if it’s mainly triggered by invalid or incorrect network settings. If the problem occurs after making changes to your phone settings, then invalid configuration must be at fault. The same thing when the problem instiaged following an update installation. It’s possible that the update has automatically altered your network settings and eventually resulted to this conflict. To clear this out, follow these steps to reset network settings on your Huawei Mate 10 Pro, and then manually configure network options based on your previous preferences before the problem started:

  1. Tap Settings from the main Apps screen.
  2. Scroll to and tap Advanced Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap select Backup & Reset option.
  4. Then select Network settings reset.
  5. Tap Network settings reset again to confirm.

Your phone will reboot when the network settings reset is finished. Don’t forget to reconnect to your Wi-Fi and/or cellular data network.

Alternatively, you can try removing and reseating the SIM card on your Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It’s another trick to refresh network functions on the phone. Be sure to turn off your phone completely before removing the SIM card to prevent causing any sort of damage.

Other options

If that won’t work, then you may have to escalate the problem to your carrier or contact Huawei Support for further assistance and advanced solutions. If you cannot send SMS or text messages but can receive, check your account status and make sure that it’s in good standing and that your services are active. If necessary, settle any account issues with your carrier as this too can be the main reason why outgoing services for your accounts aren’t available at the moment.
