One of the serious problems any LG G7 ThinQ user may encounter is realizing that their device has stopped charging, or won’t charge properly. In this episode, we show you how to address this problem and what you can do if nothing is working after exhausting all troubleshooting steps.
Problem: LG G7 ThinQ not charging properly, not detected by PC
Hi. The Droid Guy. I use an LG G7 ThinQ. Sometime last week, when I plugged the phone in, it was charging haphazardly – charging and stopping continuously. About two days later, I plugged it in with the battery juice at 3%. Three hours down the line, it was still at 3%. Yesterday, I connected the phone to my PC to transfer some files. After transferring the files, I reconnected my USB cable to the wall socket. It started charging and immediately stopped charging. I observed a burning smell at the USB port and the phone has not charged ever since. I have tried a different USB cable, a different charger. Same result. There is an old USB cable I own. If I connect my phone to my PC with it, the PC recognizes that a device is plugged in but it does not read the phone. When I used that USB cord again today, the PC still recognized it, making me all the more confused. What could be the problem? And what am I supposed to do?
Solution: If a user is not careful when the USB cable is connected to the charging port, he or she may bend or stretch the wires inside the cable, causing charging problems. In some cases, poor connection may cause lead to overheating in the charging port area, damaging the system. If your LG G7 ThinQ no longer charges normally, that’s possibly because too much heat has damaged the port. Such an issue is not fixable on your end as it requires replacement of the charging port assembly. Too much heat in the port must be the reason why there was a burning smell on your device in the past.
To see if the issue can be fixed on your level, here’s what you need to do:
Check the port
Dirt, debris, or foreign object in the charging port can block the charging cable and cause poor- charging or no-charging issue. Do a quick visual check on the port and clean it if necessary. If you think that the inside is dirty, try cleaning it with a can of compressed air. Do not stick anything inside to avoid damaging the system.
Use another set of charging accessories
If you’ve been using an old USB cable, get a new one and see if that will help. USB cables go bad overtime, especially if you don’t take care of them. The tiny wires inside can break easily. The more of these wires are broken, the less the carrying capacity of the said cable when charging. Eventually, not enough wires will be there to transfer energy from the adapter to the phone, resulting to poor charging performance.
When replacing the cable, try to get an official USB cable from LG.
Charge using a computer
Some LG users in the past were able to fix slow or freezing touchscreens in the past by charging their device thru a computer. If you haven’t tried this trick, be sure to do it. It’s simple and easy to do.
Third party app problem
To check if there’s an app problem that causes your LG G7 ThinQ to freeze or become unresponsive, you can restart it to safe mode. On this mode, no third party app (downloaded apps) will be permitted to run. So, if the phone works on safe mode without any problems at all, you can bet a bad app is the culprit.
To restart your LG G7 ThinQ to safe mode:
- With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
- In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
- When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
- After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
- Use the device for at least 24 hours while it’s on safe mode. This should give you enough time to see if there’s any difference in performance.
If there’s no problem at all, you can try to pinpoint the app by doing these steps:
- Boot to safe mode.
- Check for the problem.
- Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
- After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
- If your LG G7 ThinQ is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.
Recalibrate the battery
If you can get the phone to charge again, make sure that you also calibrate the battery. This will help the Operating System get more accurate readings of the battery levels. Here’s how:
- Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
- Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
- After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
- Restart the device.
- Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
- Repeat steps 1-5.
Your LG G7 ThinQ can charge wirelessly. If stopped charging due to a physically broken charging port, you can still power it up using a wireless charger. Make sure to get the original charger from LG, or an LG-certified third party wireless adapter.
Perform a factory reset
This is a drastic solution for this case but you may need to do it should nothing work after exhausting all troubleshooting steps.
To factory reset your LG G7 ThinQ:
- Create a backup of your files.
- From the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Tap the ‘General’ tab.
- Tap Restart & reset.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
- Tap RESET PHONE.
- Tap Delete all.
- Tap RESET
