How to fix Galaxy S7 “Access to Samsung Pay has been denied…” error

Today’s main topic is about how to deal with “Access to Samsung Pay has been denied. Unauthorized modifications have been made to your device. Contact customer service for more info.” error on the #GalaxyS7. If you encounter the same error on your S7, you must probably have the same question as one of the users below. We hope our answer will help in clarifying things out.

Problem #1: How to fix Galaxy S7 “Access to Samsung Pay has been denied…” error

I have had my Samsung phone (T-Mobile) for a few months now. When I open up Samsung pay, it says “Access to Samsung Pay has been denied. Unauthorized modifications have been made to your device. Contact customer service for more info.” Also, if I open Samsung internet and try to go into secret mode, it will not let me. It says “Rooting detected. For your security, Secret mode can’t be used on rooted phones.” So from what I understood, my device was rooted. BUT, when I installed an app to check if my device was rooted or not, it said it was not rooted. Multiple root checker apps said this. I have tried restarting, clearing cache partition, and launching in safe mode and none of them fixed or changed anything. So what I have is a device that claims to be rooted, but is not. — Fbabylemon17

Solution: Hi Fbabylemon17. We don’t know the full history of your device so we’re not 100% positive if it’s rooted or not. From our own experience and past cases we’ve seen, “Access to Samsung Pay has been denied. Unauthorized modifications have been made to your device. Contact customer service for more info.” error means that your device’s Knox Counter has been tripped. Knox is a software fuse that gets blown up if there’s an unofficial modification to your device’s kernel or related system files. Rooting or manually installing non-official firmware (flashing) trips the Knox Counter. If you did not root or flashed the device, then you may have installed a malicious or flawed app which then tried to modify the kernel or file system. In some other cases, over adventurous owners may inadvertently move critical system files around causing Knox to trip. Unfortunately, once Knox is tripped, there’s no way to reverse it. Even Samsung can’t untrip it for you so you’ll have to contend with what you have from now on.

Under normal circumstances, a rooted Samsung device can be unrooted by simply doing a master reset. This should take care of the second error about Samsung Internet app not allowing you to use Secret Mode. The first error though will most likely not go away because, again, the Knox Counter has already been tripped.

To unroot (master reset) your Galaxy S7:

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  3. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  5. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  7. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  8. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  9. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  10. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Problem #2: Galaxy S7 unread message notifications disappear after reading one notification

I know you covered text messages not notifying with recent update but my issue is with the pull down notifications. Before the update, when I pull down the notification panel, all of my unread text messages would be there. period. after the update they show up randomly and not all of them and they disappear even though they are still unread and the messaging app still shows them as unread. So if I reply to a newer message the older unread ones are no longer in notification panel (bar). I checked my settings and have selected to show all not just 3 most recent and messaging app is checked for notifications and I am getting them but they disappear. Is this just new with the upgrade or can I fix this? I really liked being able to pull down the notification bar and see what unread text messages I had without having to go into the app. — Nicole Aurello

Solution: Hi Nicole. We’ve also observed the same notification behavior in our Galaxy S7 so yes, it’s part of the new update. Unfortunately, there’s no way to retain unread messaging notifications at all at this time. We don’t know if this is going to change in the future or not since this is obviously an Android Nougat design.
