How to fix Galaxy Note8 No Power issue

There are many Galaxy Note8 users asking us for help about their device not charging and turning on. If you are one of these users, learn how to fix No Power issue below.

Problem: Galaxy Note8 stops charging and won’t turn on

Help please. My Samsung Galaxy Note8 has apparently died and won’t wake up even after countless hours of charging and using the trouble shooting guide that you all published on 09 Dec 2018. Here is the scoop. I let my phone battery drain to 1% causing it to die. (This was always an issue from day one. if I let my phone drain completely  because my phone would not respond to the charger and had to be rebooted by pressing in the power, Bixby, and volume up key). When I put my phone on the charger it miraculously recognized it and I saw the battery progress icon pop up and it said it would take 2 hours to charge. When the two hours was up I attempted to power on the phone and no luck. so I did the  tried and true method pressing in the power, Bixby, and volume up key no luck. The only response I got from my phone was a small thin band of white that flashed briefly across the screen.

So I left my phone to charge again and tried multiple chargers in the process. After hours of charging I tried the pressing in the power, Bixby, and volume up key no luck. I called the Best Buy Geek Squad who was able to service my phone thinking that I needed a battery replacement. When I got there they hooked it up to some device that could bypass the battery and told me that my main board on the phone was toast and that I would need to have the phone replaced entirely and my data could not be retrieved.

Because this phone has had its past quirks I am not convinced that it is toast and worse I would like to retrieve the data on the phone before I put it to rest. Do you all have any additional things I could try to revive this dead phone long enough to get my data off of it? Do you know how/ what I can use to get the data off the phone if I cannot get it to power on? ( Software program ect).

Note I am not certain what Android System I was running before it died and I have guessed that it was Oreo Desperate and Depressed.

Solution: Let’s be clear with one thing here: data recovery is only possible if the phone powers back on. If the Geek Squad was telling the truth, there’s no way you’ll be able your photos at all. Unlike a regular computer or laptop, the internal storage device on your phone can’t be disconnected from the board and attach it to another one to access its contents. It just doesn’t work that way. So, if your Galaxy Note8 is dead or has become unresponsive for whatever reason, there’s absolutely no way for you to get your files back.

What you can do right now is to try some tricks to see if you can power on the phone. If these tricks fail and the device remains off, you either have to get the motherboard replaced, or just get a new device entirely.

Refresh the system

Sometimes, a phone may appear unresponsive after it has become frozen. This can sometimes occur if the system encounters an error it can’t resolve on its own. To see if the system has simply become frozen, we suggest that you try to simulate the effects of a “battery pull.” Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Wait for up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.

Check the charging port

Your phone’s charging port is an exposed part and can collect a lot of dust or foreign objects over time. Make sure that you check its physical state and to clean it if necessary. It’s not unheard of that a Galaxy device stops charging when the port is dirty. If possible, try to inspect the port using a magnifying tool in order to see more clearly inside. This troubleshooting step does not tell you to repair the port but merely to give you an idea whether or not the cause of the problem might be coming from there. If you think that the port is dirty or has foreign objects inside that might hinder the device from charging properly, try cleaning it with a can of compressed air. You don’t want to insert anything inside the port to avoid damaging the system.

Check for water damage

Another thing to consider as far as the charging port is concerned is water damage or presence of water. Your Galaxy Note8 won’t charge at all if the charging port is wet, or if there’s presence of water inside. To ensure that the port is dry, leave the phone in room temperature for a day. Water naturally evaporates in room temperature but you can hasten the process a bit by placing the device near indirect heat sources, like on a back of PC or TV. DO NOT put the device near an oven or furnace. Leaving it inside a hot car or direct sunlight is a big no no either.

Use another set of charging cable and adapter

In some cases, a problem like this can be a result of a defective charging cable or adapter. A USB cable is made up of tiny wires that may break after after some time. The more of these tiny wires break, the lesser electricity is being transferred to the phone. This can eventually worsen and stop charging altogether. To see if the problem is due to a bad charging accessory, we suggest that you use another known working official cable and adapter to charge your Note8.

Charge using a PC

Some users were able to fix an issue like yours before by simply charging their device using a computer. If you have a laptop or a desktop, connect your Note8 to it using a working cable and see if it charges it. Make sure to allow the device to charge for at least an hour before attempting to restart it.

Calibrate the battery [optional]

If you can manage to power the phone back on after charging it, make sure to also calibrate the battery. This is to ensure that Android OS is recalibrated when reading battery levels. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
  2. Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
  3. After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5.

Get the phone repaired

Should all the troubleshooting steps above fail to power the phone back on, you should allow a technician check the hardware. The reasons why your Note8 fails to turn on are not limited to software issues. Hardware malfunction is the most likely culprit in this case. Depending on the exact failing component, there may or may not be a need to for a motherboard replacement. A technician should be able to tell you what needs to be done.
