How to fix Galaxy A50 texts not working | troubleshooting for can’t send or receive texts

Are you having texting issues?  In this troubleshooting article, we’ll provide solutions your Galaxy A50 texts are not working.  Make sure to follow the order of the solutions presented below.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #1: Verify network is up

Texts won’t work if your device has no signal, or if you’re located in an area with poor or intermittent signal. So, the first thing that you want to do is to check whether or not the reason for your problem is coming from the network side. Texts may still work fine even when there’s poor signal although there’s a chance that sending and receiving may be slow. Ideally, you should only do network-related activities like texting and calling when there’s strong signal (3 signal bars and more). Other than that, texting and calling may not work as expected.

If voice calling is also not working properly, it’s possible that you have a signal problem. Talk to your network operator so they can figure out the cause.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #2: Check for errors

Are you getting an error when sending or receiving texts? If you do, make sure to take note of that error. Then, do a quick Google search about it. If you’re lucky and the error is common, there may be an online solution that you can try. Keep in mind that errors can be specific to a particular device, app, or Operating System version. Make sure to consider these factors when searching for a solution.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #3: Delete messages

Both incoming and outgoing texts use the same inbox. If there’s not enough storage space in your messaging app’s inbox, this can cause texts to stop working. If your Galaxy A50 texts are not working for no apparent reason, make sure that you delete some old messages to see if it will help. Try to get rid of messages that contain a lot of media or attachments as they usually take a lot of storage space.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #4: Force close messaging app

If your Galaxy A50 texts are still not working at this point, there may be an issue with the messaging app. Try to force quit your messaging app and see if that will fix the problem. Below are the two ways to force quit an app:

Method 1: Close an app using Recent Apps key

  1. On your screen, tap the Recent Apps soft key (the one with three vertical lines on the left of the Home button).
  2. Once the Recent Apps screen is shown, swipe left or right to look for the app. It should be here if you managed to run it previously.
  3. Then, swipe up on the app to close it. This should force close it. If it’s not there, simply tap the Close All app to also restart all apps.

Method 2: Close an app using App Info menu

Another way to force close an app is by going within the app’s settings itself. It’s a longer way compared to the first method above but it’s equally effective. You want to use this method if you plan on doing other troubleshooting for the said app like clearing its cache or data. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the app.
  6. Tap Force Stop.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #5: Clear messaging app cache

If your Galaxy A50 texts are not working all of a sudden, it is possible that the problem is caused by a corrupted messaging app cache.  Like Android, your messaging app cache can become corrupted. This usually happens after an update. Learn how to clear messaging app cache below:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #6: Update messaging app

In some other cases, an app may stop working properly simply because of lack of updates.  Make sure that all apps, especially the messaging app, is fully updated. Updates not only bring cosmetic changes but also solutions to known bugs.  If you haven’t updated yet make sure that you do. Update both applications and Android operating system.

Upgrading to the latest Android OS does not automatically mean apps are updated as well. If there were no prompts for you to install app updates after you installed Android 9 Pie, make sure to double check. Open the Play Store app > More settings > My apps & games and update your apps from there.

If you have apps that you downloaded outside the Play Store, make sure that you update them too.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #7: Reset/reinstall app

Should nothing happen after clearing an app’s cache, the next good thing that you can do is to clear the app’s data. Unlike the previous procedure, this one might delete important information or data within the app. For example, if you’re trying to address an issue with a messaging app, clearing its data will delete all your messages. Be sure to back them up ahead of time.

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Tap Apps icon.
  3. Open Settings app.
  4. Tap Apps.
  5. If you’re looking for a system or default app, tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  6. Select Show system apps.
  7. Find and tap the appropriate app.
  8. Tap Storage.
  9. Tap Clear Data button.
  10. Restart the device and check for the problem.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #8: Restart device

Another way to troubleshoot the issue is by doing a forced restart.  This is usually effective in fixing minor bugs. If your Galaxy A50 texts are not working and you have no idea what’s causing it, refreshing the system by simply restarting your phone will most likely help. What you want to do is called soft reset. This is basically a restart with the aim of clearing the system by simulating the effects of a battery pull. To do that, simply press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds. Once the phone has restarted, release the buttons. This is usually effective in clearing bugs that developed when a system is left running for some time. We suggest that you restart your Galaxy A50 using this method at least once a week to lessen the chances of bugs.

For some Galaxy A50, there may be a slightly different way to arrive at the same method. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume)

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #9: Reset network settings

Some texting issues are caused by incorrect or bad network settings. Make sure to include reset network settings in your list of troubleshooting to keep network settings in top shape. Here’s how you do that:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.
  3. Tap Reset settings.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #10: Refresh system cache

Clearing the cache partition is another good way to fix Android bugs. Sometimes, updates or app installation may corrupt the system cache, which is kept in the cache partition. To ensure that the system cache is good, try clearing the cache partition and see how it goes.

To wipe the cache partition on your Galaxy A50:

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #11: Text on Safe Mode

Sometimes, third party apps may cause problems.  If your Galaxy A50 texts stop working after installing an application, try to delete that app and see if it works. Poorly coded apps may sometimes prevent texts from working on Android.  If you can’t remember the app you installed, or if you have no idea which of your apps is to blame, try to restart to safe mode. In this small all third party apps won’t be allowed to run.  So, if texting works on safe mode only, that means that the problem is coming from one of the apps. Here’s how to restart your device to Safe Mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the Power off window appears then release.
  2. Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  3. To confirm, tap Safe mode.
  4. The process may take up to 30 seconds to complete.
  5. Upon reboot, “Safe mode” appears in the lower-left of the home screen.

Don’t forget: safe mode blocks third party apps but it won’t tell you which of them is the real cause. If you think that there’s a rogue third party app in the system, you must identify it. Here’s what you need to do exactly:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your Galaxy A50 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Galaxy A50 texts not working fix #12: Factory reset

The final troubleshooting step that you can do is to wipe the phone by doing factory reset.  As the name suggests, factory reset will return all software settings to their defaults. This means that all your personal data such as photos, videos, documents, etc.  will be wiped out. Make sure that you create a backup for all of them before doing the reset.
