How to fix email issues on your Galaxy S9 [troubleshooting guide]

There are a lot of things that can go wrong with your email, starting from the first steps during setup, reception and sending of messages, to actual operation of the email app itself. Most email problems are user-fixable though so you should follow our general guidelines below to fix your problem. For issues that won’t go away after following our suggestions, you must contact the app developer and report the bug.

Below are some of the common solutions to most email issues.

Solution #1: Clear the cache partition

Android uses partitions in the storage device in order to operate efficiently. Sometimes, these partitions may run into trouble, especially after an update. The most commonly problematic partition is the cache partition where the system cache is stored. To ensure that you take care of the system cache, you need to regularly clear the cache partition every few months. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Solution #2: Clear email app cache and data

One of the most effective ways to fix app-specific bugs is to deal with the cache and data. Follow the steps below on how to do this solution.

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings at the upper right hand (three-dot icon).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find the app and tap it.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  8. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

Should the app bug remains, repeat steps 1-7 and tap CLEAR DATA.

Solution #3: Clear app preferences

Some apps will not work properly is their associated app or service has been disabled. To ensure that your email app has its needed apps and services up and running, make sure to clear app preferences. Resetting app preferences will have the following effects:

  1. re-enables previously disabled apps and services
  2. resets default apps for actions
  3. turns off background data restrictions for apps
  4. return app permissions to their defaults
  5. unblock app notifications

To reset app preferences on your S9:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap More settings (three-dot) icon at the upper right.
  4. Tap Reset app preferences.

Solution #4: Reset settings

Sometimes, the only way to fix bugs comes down to doing drastic solutions. While resetting your S9 settings is not as drastic as factory reset because it won’t delete your personal data and won’t bother you to set the phone up again afterwards, it still is considered drastic system wise since you’ll basically be returning the settings to their defaults. To see if resetting your S9 settings will help, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button.
  6. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

Solution #5: Factory reset

Should nothing work at all, you must not hesitate to wipe the phone clean and return everything back to their defaults. This should be the most that you can do. If factory reset will still not work, then you need to contact the app developer for a solution.

Please refer to the steps below on how to factory reset your S9:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  3. Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts > Backup and restore.
  4. Tap the following sliders to desired setting: Back up my data, Automatic restore.
  5. Tap the Back key (bottom right) until you reach the main Settings menu.
  6. Tap General Management > Reset > Factory data reset.
  7. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, then tap RESET > DELETE ALL.
  8. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your credentials.
  9. If prompted to verify your Samsung account, enter the password, then tap CONFIRM.
  10. Wait for the device to finish the reset sequence.

Disable two-step verification if unable to add email account

For those having trouble adding their email accounts, as the loading process indicator seems to just keeps on going forever, the bug might be caused by a faulty security mechanism implemented by your email provider (or probably within Android). To allow you to add your email account, make sure that you turn off two-step verification first. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open a web browser on your phone or computer.
  2. Sign in to your email.
  3. Go under your email settings and find the security section.
  4. Under security section, disable two-step verification and any other additional security in place.
  5. On your Android device, try to add your email account again.
  6. Once you’re email has been added, make sure that you re-able two-step verification.

Contact your email provider

If your particular email issue won’t be addressed by our suggestions above, make sure that you let your email provider know about it. When reporting a bug, it’s important that include error messages (if available) and a detailed description of the problem. If you changed some settings right before the issue occurred, or if you installed an app, that might also be worth mentioning in your report.
