A problem on random Wi-Fi disconnects is one of the widespread issues encountered by smartphone owners regardless of the device and platform. This is because network problems are inevitable. In most cases though, the transpiring symptoms are attributed to minor software errors and therefore rectifiable.
Highlighted below are potential solutions to minor Wi-Fi connectivity issues particularly on random disconnects. The steps I’ve mapped out below are particularly applied to a Sony Xperia XZ Premium device. Read on to find out what methods to try on whenever you’ll get to encounter an issue in which your Xperia XZ phone keeps disconnecting from the Wi-Fi network.

How to troubleshoot Xperia XZ Premium that keeps disconnecting from WiFi?
Before you troubleshoot software problems that may cause intermittent Wi-Fi Internet connection on your device, consider these quick tips. First, remove any third-party casing from your device. Some third-party made accessories may tend to bar the Wi-Fi antenna or obstruct the signal between the router and your phone. Also, ensure that you are within range of your wireless router. Make sure that the Wi-Fi signal strength in the status bar of your phone is in full bars. If the signal strength is low or no signal at all, try to move closer to the wireless router or the very source of your Wi-Fi internet.
If your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone is still experiencing intermittent wireless Internet or Wi-Fi drops, then move on and try these highlighted workarounds.
First solution: Power cycle your wireless router/modem.
If you’re relying on a wireless router or modem for your phone’s Wi-Fi access to the Internet and suddenly you’re having trouble with your Internet connection, then you will need to consider looking into some possible issues with the wireless router/modem as well as your phone. Routers and modems also give into firmware issues and this is when all connected devices will start having problems with wireless Internet connection. That said, test the Internet connection on your other devices that are connected to the same Wi-Fi router. If they’re also experiencing intermittent connection to Wi-Fi network, then the wireless router is likely to blame. To clear out minor firmware errors, reboot or power cycle your wireless router/modem. If you can access the network equipment, then follow these steps:
- Press the Power button to turn the router/modem.
- When it’s turned off, unplug the AC adapter from the power source.
- After 30 seconds to 1 minute, plug it back in and then press the Power button to turn it on again.
Wait for your phone to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network (is set automatically). Otherwise, manually reconnect to your Wi-Fi network. If that won’t work, then try the next possible solutions.
Second solution: Soft reset your phone then restart your Wi-Fi connection.
What you’re experiencing could be just a random software issue on the phone that affects its Wi-Fi functions. To rule this out, performing a soft reset on the phone can help. Here’s how to perform a soft reset on the Xperia XZ Premium:
- Press and hold down the Power button until the menu opens.
- Tap Restart. Doing so will trigger the phone to shutdown and restart automatically.
After the phone reboots and the problem continues, toggle the Wi-Fi switch off and then on again. This will help refresh the phone’s Wi-Fi connection. Here’s how:
- Tap to open Settings app.
- Select Network & Internet.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Wi-Fi slider to turn the feature off. After a few seconds, tap the slider again to turn Wi-Fi back on.
Wait until the phone reconnects to your Wi-Fi network and then test to see if the problem is already fixed.
Third solution: Reset APN/network settings on your phone.
Network errors can also be a direct outcome or immediate symptom of incorrect network configurations on the phone. This can be the underlying cause if the problem started after altering some settings on the phone or after installing a new system update. Some updates would override the phone’s settings when implemented. As resolution, try to reset the APN or network settings on the phone to restore the default or original network configurations and then manually configure options accordingly. Here’s how to reset APN/network settings on the Xperia XZ Premium smartphone:
- Tap to open Settings app.
- Select Network & Internet.
- Tap the Menu icon (three vertical dots) to view more options.
- Tap to select Network settings reset.
- Then tap RESET SETTINGS to confirm.
Reboot your phone when the reset is complete and then continue to set up your Wi-Fi network properly.
Fourth solution: Update phone software to the latest version.
Keeping the phone’s software up-to-date is recommended to keep the device at its optimum performance and free from random glitches and errors. Updating the phone wirelessly or via over-the-air won’t be a good option since your device doesn’t have a stable Internet connection. In that case, you need to update your device manually. If you have the Xperia Companion software installed on your computer, then try to check for and install the latest software update for your phone. Download and install Xperia Companion on your Windows or Mac computer.
Once you have the software installed, connect your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone to your computer using the supplied USB cable. When your device is connected, open the Xperia Companion software on your computer then wait until it reads your phone. Then follow the onscreen commands to check for the latest software version available to download and install.
You can visit Sony Mobile Support site then follow the given instructions and provided link to download the Xperia Companion software on your computer.
Fifth solution: Reset your phone to its factory defaults (master reset).
If your Xperia XZ Premium still keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi after exhausting all prior solutions, then you may have to consider performing system resets. There may be some fatal system errors that caused the phone’s network system to fail or become unstable. One of the best possible solutions to deal with such errors is a master reset or factory data reset. This will erase everything from the phone including complex errors that cause wireless connectivity issues. But before you do so, back up all your important files for safekeeping. Then follow these steps to factory reset/master reset your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone:
- Tap to open Settings app.
- Go to System.
- Select Reset.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Tap Reset phone.
- If prompted, enter your screen lock pattern, password, or PIN to continue.
- Tap Erase everything to confirm.
After the reset, your phone will restart automatically and then restores the factory defaults. To use your device again, you need to set it up as new. Just follow the onscreen instructions or setup wizard to complete the entire process. Be sure to properly set up Wi-Fi and connect to your Wi-Fi network using the correct network credentials.
You may contact the manufacturer of your wireless router/modem and ask help on how to update the device firmware. Or you can escalate the problem to your Internet service provider/carrier so that they can double check the current status of your account and network services from their end. If it suddenly occurs on your Xperia XZ Premium phone to experience Wi-Fi connection drops without making any changes to its settings or installing new apps, then the problem could be due to a network outage. In that case, you don’t have to do anything but to wait until the outage is over and the network services are back up and running again.
