How To Disable Automatic Microsoft Store Updates on Windows 10

It is recommended to install available update of Windows Store or Microsoft store application from time to time. Updates are important as it add new features, enhances security and fixes bugs that may have caused issues on your Windows PC.

Automatic updates on Microsoft store allows Windows users to keep Microsoft store applications up to date without the need to constantly check for available updates. Basically, its feature is to automatically check for and install available updates on the applications on Microsoft Store.

Disable Automatic Microsoft Store Updates on Windows 10

There are three separate ways on how to disable automatic Windows update for Microsoft store Application: via Microsoft store settings, via Local Group Policy editor and via Registry Editor. If you want to disable Automatic update of Microsoft store application, follow the steps below.

First Method: Disable Automatic Update via Microsoft store

To do this:

Form the settings menu on Microsoft store application, you can Disable automatic update feature by simply turning it OFF. This method is perhaps the most common and mostly used method to disable Automatic update.

  1. Press Windows Key + S on your keyboard to open Windows Search.

  2. Type Microsoft store on the Window search section.

Second Method: Disable Automatic Update via Local Group Policy Editor

Local Group policy allows Windows users to make configurations changes and manage Windows Operating system. It is divided into categories: 1. User and 2. Computer, both are located at the left pane on Local Group Police Editor.

Important note to keep in mind: If you are using Windows Home operating system, Local Group Policy Editor is not available, Therefore, you will not be able to perform this method.

  1. Press Windows key + R on your keyboard to open RUN dialog box.
  2. At RUN dialog box, type gpedit.msc and press Enter or click OK. This will open Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Navigate to the following path: Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Store\
  4. At right pane, double click the option “Turn off Automatic Download and Install of updates”. A new window opens.
  5. Click to choose the “Enabled” option.
  6. Click Apply to apply changes made
  7. Click OK to exit
  8. Exit Local Group Policy Editor.

Third Method: Disable Automatic Updates via Registry Editor

Before making some changes in the Registry Editor, make sure to create a backup. However, if you will just follow the steps correctly, you will be able to configure and disable automatic updates.

To do this:

  1. Press Windows key + R on your keyboard to open RUN dialog box.
  2. At RUN dialog box, type regedit and press Enter or click OK. This will open Registry Editor.
  3. Inside Registry Editor window, navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore
  4. If Microsoft store or Windows Store is not on the list, Right click on Microsoft Folder -> Click New from the drop down menu-> Click Key from the drop down menu->Name Key word to Microsoft Store.
  5. Right click on Microsoft store
  6. Click New
  7. Click DWORD (32-bit) Value from the drop down menu
  8. Rename DWORD (32-bit) Value to “AutoDownload”
  9. Double click “Autodownload”, change Value Data to “2”.
  10. Click Decimal under Base.
  11. Click OK to apply changes made.
  12. Restart computer. After computer completely reboots, check if Automatic update on Microsoft store is already disabled.
  13. To enable Automatic updates back, change Value Data to “4” or delete the Value data from Registry Editor.

After following the methods mentioned, you will successfully disable Automatic Microsoft store updates on Windows 10.
