Galaxy Note 3 Prompts to Choose Default TouchWiz Launcher [How to fix]

If you own a Galaxy Note 3 or a Galaxy S4 and have updated some default apps recently, you might have encountered a glitch. It is a glitch with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, at least, that’s what many of us believed.

Basically, when you press the Home button of your phone, it will prompt you to “Continue using action asā€¦” where you will choose between two different launchers and choosing “Always” wouldn’t even solve the issue. The phone will keep on prompting you that until you did something to solve it.

There are three different situations that may result to this problem:

  • If you installed a third-party launcher and haven’t chosen the default yet.
  • Touchwiz has some corrupt data that needs to be cleared.
  • If you’ve recently updated Google Search.

Third-party Launcher Issue

In case you’ve installed another launcher and your phone is asking you to choose what to use as “default” launcher, then you can fix the problem by choosing one. Ninety percent of the time the phone won’t ask you the same question, however, there are buggy launchers out there. So, if this problem can’t be resolved by that simple procedure, you have no other option but to uninstall it.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings, then the General tab.
  3. Tap Application Manager and swipe left or right to display the tab where it can be found.
  4. Find and tap the launcher.
  5. Tap Force Close, then Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
  6. Tap Uninstall, then confirm by tapping OK.

Corrupt Cache & Data

Touchwiz-related problems are common to Galaxy device owners. In fact, Samsung’s UI is often the cause of performance issues like freezing, lagging, hanging, etc. The good thing is a couple of buttons could solve the problem.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings, then the General tab.
  3. Tap Application Manager and swipe left or right to display the tab where it can be found.
  4. Scroll to and tap Touchwiz.
  5. Tap Clear Cache and then Clear Data.
  6. Reboot the phone.

Google Search Update

If you’ve updated Google Search and this problem showed immediately after that, then it’s obviously the cause. But for those who have turned on automatic updates on apps, there is a possibility you wouldn’t know what the cause really is. But if you’re reading this post now, it could be that you ran out of ideas on how to fix the problem. So, if you haven’t tried it yet, you better:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings, then the General tab.
  3. Tap Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display the tab where it can be found.
  5. Tap Google Search.
  6. Tap Uninstall Update.

For those who are currently experiencing this problem accompanied by freezes and lags, Touchwiz may be in deeper problem. Try wiping the cache partition via the Recovery Mode. If it still persists after that, backup your data and perform a factory reset.

  1. Unfortunately, none of these worked for me. I’ve been “tolerating” the problem for about 6 months. Setting the phone to download mode and clearing the cache didn’t work. Choosing Touchwiz Easy Home and then switching back to the normal Touchwiz only worked for a few minutes. Uninstalling Google search updates and reverting to the old Google search worked for about a month. The only reason I tried a different launcher in the first place was because every time I’d click the Home button, Android asked me to choose a launcher, I’d choose Touchwiz Home and “Always”, then it would ask me to choose again the next time I clicked the home button.

Installing a different launcher and selecting it when I got the dreaded popup didn’t help, either. It just gave me 3 options to choose from for home button launchers, instead of only Touchwiz and Touchwiz Easy.

I believe I’ve found the solution. I’ve gone one day without getting the “Choose your default home” popup. Apparently, when there are more than Touchwiz and Touchwiz Easy as the only options in Settings > General > Default Applications > Home, Android loses the ability to save the selection, or it could just be a conflict with Outlook Connect.

In my Settings > General > Default Applications > Home I had Touchwiz Easy, Touchwiz, and Outlook Connect. No matter how many times I choose Touchwiz as my default Home, it wouldn’t save. I would select Touchwiz, click the back button, and Settings > General > Default Applications > Home would say Android System.

Once I uninstalled Outlook Connect, it appears to be back to normal. Instead of Android System, my home says Touchwiz. One day and no popups telling me to choose my Home.
