How to fix your Samsung Galaxy J7 that keeps restarting [Troubleshooting Guide]

We’ve received quite a lot of complaints from our readers who have experienced frequent reboots with their devices. Among those phones is the Samsung Galaxy J7, a mid-range device with pretty impressive specs for its category and have received quite positive reviews from owners for its performance and design. It’s too bad, however, that it’s one of the devices that encountered this kind of problem. The thing is, it might be just a minor issue caused by some apps or it could be a serious firmware problem that needs your immediate attention.

Samsung Galaxy J7 keeps restarting

In this post, I will be tackling this problem with the Galaxy J7 being the subject of our troubleshooting. It is imperative that we try to troubleshoot this problem as soon as possible as it may be a sign of a serious firmware issue not to mention it’s very annoying that you cannot use your phone to its full potential because it reboots when it wants to or if the problem is triggered. We will have to look into some possibilities and try to rule out each one of them until we can pinpoint what the problem really is or what caused it. If we know the cause, we might have a good chance of solving it without any help from a technician.

Samsung Galaxy J7 starting to frequently restart without apparent reason or cause

Problem: My phone started to restart on its own and as far as I’m concerned, this phone hasn’t suffered any physical damage or any sort of liquid damage so I’m a bit confused why it’s doing this. I noticed, however, that it kind of slowed down a bit and since then it started to restart randomly and it seems like it’s restarting more frequently each day. I can no longer use my phone like I used to because I don’t know when it would reboot. Help me please.

Troubleshooting: As of now, we don’t have a clue why your phone is randomly or frequently rebooting on its own so we have to troubleshoot it and here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Use your phone while charging

We have to know if your phone would still restart when it has a stable power source. The purpose of this procedure is to find out if the battery is the problem. You know, slightly damaged batteries are unstable and while they may still be able to power up your device, reboots may occur when they start to fail. So, we have to give your phone a stable power source and continue using it to know if it reboots when it’s plugged in because if not, then it’s a battery issue and you may have to buy a new battery so you can continue using your phone without any disruption. That’s one of the good things with this phone because it has a removable battery and you don’t need a technician to replace it.

Step 2: Use your phone while in safe mode

Assuming your phone charges fine when plugged in but it still reboots, then you need to know if one of the third-party apps you installed is causing the problem. You have you reboot your J7 in safe mode to  temporarily disable all third-party elements, here’s how:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

Assuming the phone doesn’t restart on its own in safe mode, then it’s confirmed that one of the apps you installed is causing the problem. If you have installed an app you suspect is causing this problem, then find it, clear its cache and data and if that won’t work, then you have to uninstall it.

How to clear app cache and data on Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap MORE > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache.
  8. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.

How to uninstall an app from your Galaxy J7

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

However, if the problem still persists even in this mode, then your third-party apps isn’t the cause of the problem. Move on to the next step…

Step 3: Reboot phone in recovery mode and wipe cache partition

Assuming the phone still reboots in safe mode, we have to go after the firmware and first thing you should do is delete all possible corrupt system caches. You can do so by booting your phone up in Android system recovery and then wiping the cache partition. While it may delete all the caches, don’t worry, they will be replaced with new ones when the phone reboots. Here’s how you wipe cache partition:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

It would take a little bit more time to reboot but wait for the phone to become active and then continue using it and be keen in observing it to see if the phone still reboot on its own. If the problem still remains after wiping the cache partition, then you should do the next step.

Step 4: Backup files and data and reset your phone

Now, it’s time to reset the phone, assuming all other procedures failed. You will lose all your files and data so make sure you back them up before the reset. After backing up, disable the Factory Reset Protection so you won’t be locked out of your phone after the reset. Here’s how you disable FRP:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts.
  4. Tap Google.
  5. Tap your Google ID email address. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
  6. Tap More.
  7. Tap Remove account.
  8. Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.

Now that it’s disabled, follow these steps to reset your phone through Recovery mode:

  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

I hope this troubleshooting helps.

Samsung Galaxy J7 started to keep rebooting after a firmware update

Problem: First of all guys, I’ve been following your blog since 2014 when I bought a Note 5. I upgraded to Note 7 but then the battery problem strikes so I have to buy this much cheaper phone, Galaxy J7. So far I’ve been enjoying this phone until recently when it started to reboot on its own. I think there was an update I downloaded and installed but I’m not really so sure. But anyway, it reboots without warning. The screen would just turn black and come back up again and works normally. Then later on, it would reboot again and the same thing happens. I’m not new to Android but I just want to be sure what I do won’t mess up my phone any further that’s why I’m asking for your help guys. Thank you.

Troubleshooting: If you’re positive enough that this problem started after a firmware update, then we first have to look into the possibility that maybe it’s caused by some corrupt data, then we go to other possibilities after we’ve ruled that out without resulting any favorable effects. Here’s what you have to do in this case:

Step 1: Immediately delete all caches of previous firmware

It’s the firmware’s job to create system caches it uses to make the performance of your device smoother. However, firmware updates may often corrupt those files or make them obsolete. In which case, you just have to delete all of them so that the new firmware will create new files that are completely compatible with it and this is how you do it:

If the phone still randomly reboots after this, then you have no other choice but to move on to the next step.

Step 2: Backup your files and data, Factory Reset your phone

It’s a firmware-related issue that started after an update. We don’t have to look into a possibility that some of the apps are causing the phone to reboot especially if the phone was working fine prior to the update. At this point, you simply just have to backup your files and data especially ones that are stored in your phone’s internal storage and then reset your phone. Here’s how…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Backup and reset.
  4. If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  5. If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  6. Tap Factory data reset.
  7. Tap Reset device.
  8. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password.
  9. Tap Continue.
  10. Tap Delete all.

After the reset and the phone still restarts, then you’ve installed a bad update. The firmware has to be re-installed to make your phone work without a hitch, however, you will need an authorized technician to re-flash the firmware so the warranty won’t be voided.
