How To Fix HTC One That Reboots or Shuts Down Randomly

While HTC One is one of the best smartphones produced last year, it’s not free from problems. The thing is, the Samsung Galaxy S4 seemed to have stolen the limelight so many One owners would have dig a little deeper to find solutions to their problems.

One of the problems that seem common with the phone is the random rebooting or shutting down. It happens without apparent reason but there are a couple of procedures you can do to determine what the problem really is and fix it.

Boot HTC One to Safe Mode

It could be an app that’s causing all the trouble but you cannot really pin-point which one it is. To confirm your suspicion, you would need your phone to boot into the Safe Mode and have all third-party apps and services disabled upon start up. Here’s how you do it:

  1. From any screen, press and hold the Power button.
  2. Tap and hold the ‘Power off’ option.
  3. Tap ‘Restart.’
  4. When the phone restarts, ‘Safe Mode’ will appear on the lower-left corner of the screen. If it doesn’t, repeat the process.

Now, observe closely if the phone still reboots or shuts down while in this mode. If it doesn’t, then you have confirmed your suspicion that third-party apps are causing the problem. You need to determine which app is it and uninstall or disable it. Here’s how you uninstall a third-party app:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Application manager.
  4. If necessary, swipe right to the Downloaded screen.
  5. Tap the desired application.
  6. Tap Uninstall and then tap OK.

Uninstalling the app that causes the phone to reboot would solve this problem. However, if the phone still reboots even if it’s in Safe Mode, there’s nothing left for you to do but the next step.

Reset your HTC One

This procedure is a little bit of a hassle as you need to back up your data such as downloaded content, ringtones, images, apps, and contacts. However, this procedure would always solve a problem like this. Now, here are the couple of ways you can do the factory reset:

Reset from the Settings Menu

  1. From the Home screen, tap ‘Applications’ icon.
  2. Tap Settings and scroll to and tap ‘Backup & reset.’
  3. Tap ‘Reset phone.’
  4. Scroll down a bit and select ‘Erase all data’ check box.
  5. Tap OK to confirm.

Reset using Hardware Keys

  1. Turn the phone off completely.
  2. Press and hold the ‘Volume Down’ and ‘Power’ keys together.
  3. When you see an Android robot on a skateboard, release both keys.
  4. Use the Volume Down key to highlight FACTORY RESET.
  5. Press the Power button to choose it.

You cannot retrieve files deleted during the reset so be extra mindful to backup all important data on your phone prior to following any of the procedures above. Now, if the phone still reboots even after doing a factory reset, have it checked by a technician as it may be a hardware problem.

  5. I did a factory reset because my HTC one m10 started shutting down at 20%. then at 40%. so I did everything suggested and also now did a factory reset and now it shuts down at 70%. I find it is random but also happen when I went to take a picture or when I went to use Viber and a few other apps. most of the time when it reboots it is at 1% other times just a little lower than the shut down %.
Also when it reboots I have lost some of the names attached to the numbers. The number is there but the persons name has gone

  6. I have done a factory reset and now instead of shutting down at 40% it know shuts down at 70%. I can go to take a picture and it shuts down. Or click to use viber and it shuts down. I am unable to find a reason for this. I have done a battery test and it’s result was good.
I am lost at what to do next.

  21. My phone is stuck sevaral times in a week. that time I cant make any calls or cant go to any app. only solution is restating with computer. pl tell me what I have to do.

  22. I’d bet HTC and others build this into their phones, that way people will buy another new phone, even if they buy a different brand, in the big picture all phone manufacturers win when people buy a different brand! They want to sell you a new phone every six months!

  23. Now mine is no longer connecting with the computer (have tried everything to get the MTP driver to install with no luck – it simply will not install), and now it’s rebooting several times a day. I need a way to back up my contacts at the very least before I do a factory reset.

  24. my htc onex restart again and again please help me i have urgent data in my phone how can i recover ? friends.

  25. My One Max has been rebooting itself ever since Sprint pushed out the last update (which also disabled bootloader access, so the safe mode option above is no longer available). I really want to avoid a factory reset if at all possible…

  26. My HTC phone shut down and it’s not coming back on it isn’t charging the charging light is not coming on, it gone a week now an still not coming on

  27. So a few months ago I noticed it randomly started resetting itself until it died then usually worked again after I charged it again… But it started doing it more and more often. One day I got real mad and hit it against mt drive shaft and it seemed to fix it for a few days.

As it went on it seems that it is rebooting more than it’s actually functioning properly (to the point I went and bought a little GoPhone from AT&T today because my phone is unusable 99% of the day) and some thing called the “HBOOT” screen has been popping up. After skimming Google it looks like this is something people use for hacking or unlocking a phone so don’t know why it’s showing up now…

Just need to have it work for a few hours while I back my data up for when my upgrade comes next month… Any help would be greatly appreciated

  28. One thing that will crash it is if you’re using Chromecast functionality and try to use the volume buttons while the casting app is closed to adjust the volume.
