How to fix “Unfortunately, Email has stopped” error on Galaxy S10 | What to do if email app keeps crashing

Email has stopped error is a common bug in many Android devices, particularly in Galaxy models. If you want to know how to deal with this issue, follow our suggested troubleshooting below.

Email has stopped fix #1: Force close Email app

In many email app issues we’ve encountered over the years, the cause of the problem is minor bugs. Such types of bugs go away after restarting the app itself. If you are yet to do it, here are the two ways to do that:

  1. On your screen, tap the Recent Apps soft key (the one with three vertical lines on the left of the Home button).
  2. Once the Recent Apps screen is shown, swipe left or right to look for the Instagram app. It should be here if you managed to run it previously. Then, swipe up on the app to close it. This should force close it. If it’s not there, simply tap the Close All app to also restart all apps.

Another way to force close an app is this:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Instagram app.
  6. Tap Force Stop.

Email has stopped fix #2: Check for error

If your Email app keeps crashing and showing an error other than Email has stopped, the problem must have a different cause. It’s important that you take note of the error in order for your troubleshooting to be more directed. The best way to fix the error on your own though is by using Google. If the bug is widespread, there may be others who encountered and fixed it. When searching for answers to a particular error, be sure to be specific as possible in order to narrow down the solutions.

If you can’t find a solution for a particular error that’s showing on your email app, continue with the steps below.

Email has stopped fix #3: Restart your S10

When force quitting or restarting the app won’t work, the next good thing that you can do is restart the device itself. Like the first one, this step may potentially clear the phone of its minor bugs after running it for some time. Some bugs may develop if you let your phone run for days without restarting. To fix problems arising from this state, make sure to do a soft reset on your device. Unlike a regular restart, soft reset simulates the effect of a battery pull, thereby clearing the RAM as well in the process. This proves effective in the past when dealing with minor bugs. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 12 seconds or until the device power cycles. Note: Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. Note: Utilize the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Allow up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.
  3. If Maintenance Boot Mode screen won’t show, then your device does not have it. Simply wait for the device to power down completely.

Email has stopped fix #4: Install updates

Installing updates not only bring new cosmetic changes but also fixes to known or reported bugs. To lessen the chances of bugs from developing and to fix known issues, make sure that you keep your Galaxy S10 updated. There are three ways to keep the software side of your device up-to-date:

  • Install Android (OS) updates
  • Update apps via Play Store
  • Update apps via Galaxy Store

If your Galaxy S10 was bought from your carrier, it should automatically notify you if there are available Android updates. Simply tap on the notification from the notification bar from the top and install from there.

For apps downloaded from the Play Store, what you can do is to open the Play Store and hit the Update All button to install pending updates. If you have apps taken outside the Play Store, you may need to download an APK to update them. If you don’t know how to do that, talk to the developer of the app.

Some Samsung apps may require that you visit the Galaxy Store in the phone or go under each app’s settings menu to update. For example, in order to update the default Gallery app, you must open the app, open its settings menu, tap About Gallery, and hit the update button (if there’s no update button, that means the app is up-to-date).

Email has stopped fix #5: Delete and add email account

If you are getting authentication error or similar, the best thing that you can do is to delete the email account and add it back up. Make sure that you know the correct password for the account before doing so. This has been a tested solution for many email app issues in the past so hopefully it works on your case as well. If not, then finish the rest of the suggestions below.

Email has stopped fix #6: Clear Email app cache

In case the problem lies on the email app cache, the next good thing to do is delete the app cache. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Instagram app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache button.

Email has stopped fix #7: Reset Email app

Should nothing work after clearing the email app cache, you should follow it up with clearing of data. The steps are the same with one exception: choosing clear data instead of clear cache. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Instagram app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear data button.

Email has stopped fix #8: Check for rogue apps

If Email has stopped error started after installing an app, you may have a third party app problem. To see if that’s the case, restart the device to safe mode and check. On safe mode, all third party apps are suspended so only preinstalled apps such as the default Email app runs. If there’s no Email has stopped error, that means that one of the apps you installed must be to blame.

Here’s how to boot the phone to safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the Power off window appears then release.
  2. Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  3. To confirm, tap Safe mode.
  4. The process may take up to 30 seconds to complete.
  5. Upon reboot, “Safe mode” appears in the lower-left of the home screen.

If the problem is absent on safe mode but returns in normal mode, you must use the process of elimination to identify it. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your S10 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

If you can remember when the problem started after installing a particular app, you don’t need to go through the safe mode process. Simply delete the app from the system and see if that fixes the error.

Email has stopped fix #9: Try another email app

If there’s no change on safe mode at all, it may be due to the fact that the current email app version has a bug that can’t be resolved on your end. Try to see how email works if you use other email apps. There are a lot of good email apps out there so this not a problem at all. We suggest that you stick with official apps from trusted developers like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc. Each of these companies offers free email apps in the Play Store so it’s up to you which one to use.

Email has stopped fix #10: Wipe cache partition

Android uses a system cache, which is stored in the cache partition, to load apps quickly. Sometimes, this cache gets corrupted during and after an update, or for some other reasons. While this may sound harmless, a corrupted cache can eventually cause performance issues as well as a bunch of other minor annoyances. To ensure that your phone’s system cache is fresh, you can wipe the cache partition. This will force the phone to delete the current cache and replace it with a new one over time.

To wipe the cache partition on your S10:

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Bixby button at the same time.
  3. While still holding the Volume Up and Bixby keys, press and hold the Power button.
  4. The Recovery screen menu will now appear. When you see this, release the buttons.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Email has stopped fix #11: Factory reset
