How to reboot your Galaxy J7 in safe mode

Just to make things straight here, booting the phone in safe mode alone doesn’t fix the problem, although it might not occur while the device is in this mode. Doing this will temporarily disable all third-party apps and other third-party elements. If the problem is caused by one of those things, then it won’t occur while the phone is in this mode.

Aside from safe mode, it is also called “diagnostic state” as you can do all sorts of troubleshooting while you are allowed to continue using the phone normally. When the phone is booting up into this mode, only built-in apps and services will be loaded. It may, however, leave an impression that the problem is fixed especially if it’s caused by a third-party app but when the phone is booted up in normal mode, the same thing happens.

Now, here’s the steps on how to reboot your device in Safe mode…

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

We suggest that when you start your Galaxy J7 in this mode, you continue using it normally or try to trigger the problem to know if it still occurs and if so, then you might be facing a firmware issue. However, if the problem doesn’t show up while it’s in this mode, then it means that one or some of the third-party apps is causing the problem. Find the culprit and uninstall it.

How to wipe cache partition on your Samsung Galaxy J7

This procedure will delete all the caches created by the system that are saved in the cache directory. You don’t have access to individual caches but even if you have, you won’t be able to determine which cache is for which. While it deletes them, what really happens is that they’re being replaced with new ones.

There are times when the system caches get corrupted due to some factors that have to undergo in your device. For instance, firmware updates have higher tendencies to corrupt caches and data but aside from that, they automatically make some caches obsolete. So, the new firmware has to create new caches that are completely compatible with the new system.

Don’t worry though, none of your files and data will be deleted if you did this…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

The phone may take a little more time to reboot after this so wait until it becomes active before you proceed with your troubleshooting.

How to turn On / Off Samsung Galaxy J7 Anti-theft feature

It’s called an ‘anti-theft’ feature because it locks everyone out of your phone when it’s reset while this feature is engaged. The user has to know the correct Gmail ID and its password you used when you first set it up. Without it, it’s almost impossible to access the phone after a master reset.

The good thing about this feature is that it’s very easy to set up. In fact, when you’re setting up your phone for the first time, you really don’t have to proactively enable it because the moment you sign your Google ID in and enable one of the screen locks, this feature comes into play automatically. How to turn on anti-theft

  1. If a Google ID has already been set up (ex. Email, Play store, Chrome, etc.) and a PIN, password or fingerprint lock has been enabled, anti-theft has been activated automatically.
  2. If a Google ID has not been set up, see Email accounts. After signing into a Google ID, a PIN, password or fingerprint lock will need to be set up to turn on Anti-theft.

How to turn off anti-theft

To turn off the device anti-theft, you will have to sign out of your Google ID on the device and elect to not sign in with a Google ID into any Google services. Once you sign in with a Google ID to any service and setup a PIN, password or fingerprint lock, you are automatically turning on anti-theft. To sign out of your Google ID, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts.
  4. Tap Google.
  5. Tap your Google ID email address. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
  6. Tap More.
  7. Tap Remove account.
  8. Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.

You have to do this procedure before you actually do the Master reset so you won’t be locked out of your phone. While we understand you know your Google ID and password, we still suggest you disable anti-theft before a reset just to make sure.

How to do the Factory Reset on your Samsung Galaxy J7

A Factory Reset is when you bring the phone back to its factory defaults through the Settings menu. While we suggest you disable anti-theft feature before a reset, it doesn’t really matter if you disabled it or not when you’re doing this.

The Factory Reset Protection (FRP) won’t take effect if the reset is done through settings because, obviously, you already have access to the phone prior to the reset. It’s assumed you’re the owner and that you’re just resetting your phone due to some issues.

  1. Back up data on the internal memory.
  2. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Backup and reset.
  5. If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  6. If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  7. Tap Factory data reset.
  8. Tap Reset device.
  9. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password.
  10. Tap Continue.
  11. Tap Delete all.

We recommend you reset your phone this way if the problem is not that serious; it’s safe and it’s easier to do than the next one.

How to boot your Galaxy J7 in Recovery mode and do the Master Reset

This is another way of resetting your device. Just like the previous reset procedure, this will delete all your personal files and data including the settings in your phone that’s not original configuration. So, you better backup your files and data before doing this. Aside from that, you also have to disable the anti-theft feature of your phone especially if you don’t have a clue what your Google ID and password is because you will be locked out of your device and it’s impossible to regain access.

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  5. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  6. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  7. Press Power button to select.
  8. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  9. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  10. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  11. Press the Power key to restart the device.

This procedure will reformat both the cache and data partitions so if the problem is caused by missing, obsolete or corrupt caches or data, this procedure should be able to fix it. The fact is, almost every problem, as long as it’s not hardware-related, can be fixed by this reset, so it’s imperative you know how to do this.
