What to do if the microphone isn’t working on your Samsung Galaxy S9 (easy steps)

We have readers who reported that the microphone with their Samsung Galaxy S9 units no longer work. I did a research on this and reached out to owners who have encountered the problem and I was surprised to know there are so many who have actually experienced it. Some were able to fix the problem while others weren’t so lucky. Many of those who haven’t fixed their problem were given a replacement unit only to find out the problem is still happening. So, it seems like if this is not a problem with the firmware, then it could be with the hardware.

In this post, I will share with the some of the solutions that were suggested by our readers who have encountered this problem. If you’re one of the owners who have similar issue, then continue reading as this article may be able to help you one way or another.

How to troubleshoot your Galaxy S9 with a microphone that no longer works

The following are some of the solutions that may work for you. Try to see if you can make the microphone of your phone work again after doing a procedure or two. Please note that this is a widespread problem and after troubleshooting your device and the problem continues, you always have an option to bring your phone back to the store to have it replaced and/or repaired.

First solution: Force Close Bixby Voice

This is one of the suggestions from our readers who have encountered this problem and were actually able to fix it. However, this might not work for others as it depends what the cause why the microphone in your Galaxy S9 no longer works is. This solution works for cases wherein the Bixby Voice is interfering with the operation of the some services. If the microphone doesn’t work no matter what app you use, then this solution is for you. Here’s how you force stop Bixby Voice:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select Bixby Voice.
  4. Tap Force Stop.

After doing this, try to record your voice using the default voice recorder or make a video using the  camera to know if the microphone is working properly.

Second solution: Reset app with issue

For users who have issues with the microphone while using certain apps, your problem might be limited to the app. For instance, if the mic doesn’t work while using Messenger, then it could be just a minor issue with the Messenger and the best thing to do about it is to reset the app in question.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select app you have issues with.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear cache to clear the app’s cache.
  6. Tap Clear data, then tap OK.

Do the same to other apps you also have problems with.

Third solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

There were cases wherein the microphone stopped working after some settings were changed. If you’re positive that the cause of the problem is due to some settings you changed, then it’s not a problem at all. There’s one thing you can do to bring everything to normal again and that’s to Reset All Settings. This will bring the phone back to its factory configuration but none of your files and data will be deleted so it’s safe.

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset all settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button.

On the other hand, if the microphone just stopped working without apparent reason and that previous methods didn’t work, then you have to reset your phone as it’s possible that it’s an issue with the firmware. However, before you do that, make sure you backup your files and data as they will be deleted during the process.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Fourth solution: Update the firmware

After the reset and the microphone is still not working, try to see if there’s an update available for your device. It’s a widespread issue and many have actually reported it to Samsung and fixes are often rolled out together with firmware updates. If there’s no update available, then you should bring it back to the store where you bought it so that they will replace it with a new one.
