Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge built-in email client keeps crashing [Troubleshooting Guide]

Your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has to built-in email clients this is due to Google’s mandate to Android phone manufacturers to always include some of its apps. All Android devices have the Email app being the built-in client but Google wanted Gmail to be included as well.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Email app

But in this post, I will tackle the issue involving the Email app on your S7 Edge that keeps crashing and characterized by the error message “Unfortunately, Email has stopped.” It’s not clear, at this point in time, why the error appears. While we can logically say the problem is with the Email app, there are other factors we have to consider in order to fully understand why this problem occurs.

Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 Edge that has the error “Unfortunately, Email has stopped”

The purpose of this troubleshooting guide is for us to know what the problem is all about, what caused it and what needs to be done to fix it. Again, there’s no guarantee of a fix but that let it not stop you from doing something that might just make your phone work again. Before we jump to our troubleshooting, however, here’s one of the messages we received from our readers regarding this problem…

Problem: Hello guys. I own a Galaxy S7 Edge and recently it was updated to the Nougat version I think. After the update, however, I could no longer check my email due to the error that keeps popping up. It says “Unfortunately, Email has stopped” and it keeps showing up whenever I try to view an email or compose one. Is there something you can do about this?

Troubleshooting: Frankly, there’s nothing we can do about it but there’s something YOU can do. We’ll suggest things you can try here so read on.

Step 1: Reboot your phone in Safe mode

Let’s try to find out if the problem is caused by one or some of the third-party apps by booting your phone in safe mode. In so doing, you’re isolating problem immediately, so if the error doesn’t show up when in this mode and you can actually send / receive emails without being greeted by the error, then you just have to find the app that’s causing it and uninstall it. Here’s how you boot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If, however, the problem still occurs, i.e. the error still shows up when you view or read an email, then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Clear the cache and data of the Email app

By doing this, you’re actually resetting the Email app. This can potentially fix the problem considering the error message specifically mentions the app and that it’s triggered by the app itself. The thing is you may lose all the email you’ve already downloaded. So messages that aren’t in your account’s inbox may not be retrieved. Those that are still in the inbox, however, will be downloaded but marked ‘Unread’.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Email.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.

After this, try to setup your account and see if the error still shows up.

Step 3: Clear the cache partition so caches will be replaced

After doing the first two steps and the problem still occurs, it’s time you just go after the firmware and wipe the cache partition so that system caches will be replaced with new ones that are completely compatible with the new system.

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Step 4: Perform Master Reset to bring your phone back to default settings

At this point in time, it’s better that you just backup your files and data and then do the reset to bring the phone back to its original settings. There’s a chance the problem is just caused by a misconfiguration and this is how you do it:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Alternatively, you can just reset your phone through the Settings menu…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

I hope this helps.
