Launching the Phone App Screen
Using the phone’s dialer screen is deemed the most traditional way to place a call among smartphone users. Here’s how to launch the phone dialer on your Note 5:
- Tap Phone from the Home screen application shortcuts.
- Tap the keypad icon to display the keyboard, if necessary.
- On the keypad, tap the number keys to enter the phone number (if you’re calling a new number).
- Your phone comes with a Smart Dial feature that automatically searches for matching contacts as you enter the digits on the dialer. Just tap the contact number you want to dial from the search result to fill in the number on the keypad immediately.
- Tap the Phone icon to make the call.
- Just wait for the other party to answer as your phone dials the number.
- If you want to end the call, just tap the Drop/End Call
How to make a call to contact
- Tap Phone from the Home screen.
- On the phone dialer screen, tap Contacts to view the contacts list.
- Scroll to and tap to select a contact you want to call.
- Tap the Call/Phone icon next to the number to call.
Just wait for the other party to answer your call.
How to make a Call using Call Logs
You can also use the call logs list to quickly place calls to recent incoming, outgoing, or missed numbers. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap Phone from Home.
- Tap Log to view the call logs list.
- On the Call Logs list, tap an entry to display the call details.
- To place call, tap the Call icon.
- To view additional options, tap the name or number.
- To end the call, tap the End Call icon.
Another way to place a call straight from the Call logs list is by swiping the entry you want to call from left to right and the call will be made.
Tips: If your call won’t connect, try to verify if the number you dial is using the correct area code. Also ensure you are calling in an area where wireless network/signal strength is good.
How to answer phone calls on your Galaxy Note 5
The incoming call screen appears when you receive a phone call from a contact. On this screen, you will see the caller ID icon, name, and phone number of the calling party. If the incoming call is from someone who’s not in Contacts, only the default caller ID icon and the phone number are displayed on the incoming call screen.
- To answer an incoming call, simply drag the Answer Call icon when a call arrives and the call begins.
- To end the call, tap the End Call icon.
- If you want to mute the ringer without rejecting the call, just press the Volume key down.
- To reject an incoming call, drag the Reject Call icon to the left. Doing so will stop the ringtone or vibration, and the call will be sent directly to your voicemail.
Note: If your phone is off, all calls will automatically go to your voicemail.
How to reject a call and send a text message to the caller
If you’re asking how to reject an incoming call and automatically send a text message to the caller, follow these steps:
- Drag the Reject call with message up from the bottom of the screen when a call arrives.
- Tap to select any of the message templates you want to send to the caller. The selected message will then be sent to the caller.
You can also use the Call settings menu to edit existing reject messages or create new ones. Here’s how:
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Applications to continue.

- Tap Call blocking.

How to make Emergency Calls on your Galaxy Note 5
Your phone is designed in such a way that allows you to place calls to 9-1-1 even if your phone’s screen is locked or your account is restricted. Here’s how to call 911 emergency number:
- Swipe the Phone shortcut up from the lock screen.
- Tap Emergency call.
- On the dialer screen, tap 911.
The emergency call is placed as long as you are in an area with wireless service.
Your Galaxy Note 5 also integrates a Global Positioning System (GPS) chip necessary for using E911 emergency location services where accessible.
When placing an emergency call, make sure to report your location to the 911 operator because some designated emergency call takers or Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) are not equipped to receive GPS location information from your device.
How to place a call using gestures
Your Galaxy Note 5 comes with a few intuitive motion and gesture-based actions that will enable useful functions. It simplifies certain interactions with your device like making a call. You have to enable motions and gestures on your device for you to use it.
Here’s how to enable it on your Note 5:
- Tap Apps from the Home screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap to open the Device tab.
- Scroll to and tap Motions and gestures.
- On the Motions and gestures screen, tap the slider next to a feature you want to turn on or off.
If you want you can also swipe through the descriptions of each feature at the top of the screen.
Making a Call with Motions and Gestures
There are four functionalities you can use when you enable motions and gestures on your device, including Direct Call function.
Direct call is a phone feature that allows you to call a contact when you place your phone to your ear under certain circumstances, including viewing a contact, viewing call information from the call logs, or engaging in text message conversation.
Here’s how you make a call with motions and gestures’ direct call feature:
- Tap Apps from the Home screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Device.
- Tap Motions and gestures.
- Tap the slider next to Direct call to enable the feature.
- Direct call feature needs to be turned on first for you to make a call using a gesture.
After you enabled Direct call function, you can start making a call using any of the aforementioned circumstances. Just raise the phone to your ear and direct call will automatically dial the number of the contact information you’re currently viewing.
How to access and manage Phone Settings on your Galaxy Note 5
You can configure options for calling with your phone as you desire. Here’s how:
- Access the phone settings from the Phone app.
- Tap Phone->More->Settings.
Alternatively, follow these steps to access the Phone settings through Apps menu:
- Tap Apps from Home.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Applications.
- Tap Phone to view the Call settings menu and configure options according to your preference.
- Tap the slider next to an option to turn it on or off.
Below are some of commonly used call options and settings you can configure:
- Swipe to call or send messages – used for making calls or sending messages with a swipe to the left or right across a contact’s information in Contacts, or any log item in the Phone app.
- Only contacts with devices – for viewing contacts with phone numbers and hide other contacts
- Call blocking – for creating and managing a list of phone numbers to let your phone automatically block calls from those numbers, as well as compose or edit response messages when rejecting incoming calls.
- Answering and ending calls – option to manage settings for answering and ending calls. You can answer calls by pressing the Home key or using voice commands like saying “Answer.” Calls can also be ended by pressing the Power key or saying “Reject” on your device.
- Automatic answering – automatically answer calls after two seconds while a headset or Bluetooth device connected to your phone.
- Call alerts – to manage options for sounds and vibration alerts during a call.
- Ringtones and keypad tones – for selecting ringtones and vibration sounds for incoming calls and keypad touches.
- Voicemail settings – to manage Visual Voicemail options.
How to use Call Forwarding on your Galaxy Note 5
Call Forwarding is a feature that lets you forward incoming calls to another phone number. When enabled, this feature works even when your device is off, allowing you to make calls from your phone. The only downside though is a higher rate charge for calls you have forwarded.
Note: Please contact your service provider/carrier for more information about call forwarding rates and charges.
If you’re okay with the fee, then you can activate call forwarding on your Note 5 device. Here’s how:
- Tap Phone from the Home screen to open the phone screen.
- Tap the Keypad icon to display the keypad, if necessary.
- Press *72 on the keypad plus the phone number you want to forward calls to.
- Tap the Place Call icon.
Once Call Forwarding has been successfully activated, you will hear a tone confirmation. By then, all calls made to your wireless number will be forwarded to the designated phone number.
Forward All Calls via Call Forwarding Unconditional (CFU)
You can also forward all calls to another phone number immediately without allowing the device to ring. This is made possible using the Call Forwarding Unconditional (CFU) feature. Follow these steps:
- Tap Phone from any Home screen.
- Tap the More icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap More settings.
- Tap Call forwarding.
- Tap Always forward.
- Enter the phone number where you want your calls to be forwarded to.
- Tap Turn on.
Forward Some Calls via Call Forwarding Conditional (CFC)
With Call Forwarding Conditional (CFC), you can forward incoming calls to another phone number if you don’t or can’t answer them. You can use this feature when you are busy, unavailable, or just can’t reply. Follow these steps to enable conditional call forwarding to forward certain calls:
- Tap Phone from any Home screen.
- Tap the More icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap More settings.
- Tap Call forwarding.
- Tap to select your preferred option. You may choose to Forward when busy, Forward when unanswered, or Forward when unreachable.
- Enter the phone number you want your calls to be forwarded to.
- Tap Update.
Cancel Call Forwarding
If you no longer want to use Call Forwarding, then just deactivate or cancel the feature on your phone. Here’s how:
- Tap Phone from Home.
- Tap the More icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap More settings.
- Tap Always forward.
- Tap Turn off to disable Call Forwarding on your device.
How to Block Calls on your Galaxy Note 5
If you don’t want to receive calls from certain people, then you can block calls from their number. Here’s how:
- Tap Phone from the Home screen.
- Tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Call rejection.
- Tap Auto reject list.
- Enter the number you want to block.
- You may enter the entire phone number or set a specific condition like Exactly the same as (default), Start with, Ends with, or Includes, whatever you prefer most.
- To search for a phone number to block from your Contacts list:
- Tap the Contacts
- Tap Logs or Contacts.
- Tap the number you want to reject or contact number you want to add to the reject list.
- To block all unknown numbers, toggle the Unknown slider to turn it ON.
Unblock a Call or Phone Number
To remove a number from the blocked list and allow incoming calls from that number, follow these steps:
- Tap Phone from Home.
- Tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Call rejection.
- Tap Auto reject list.
- Tap the minus (-) sign next to the contact name or number to remove it from the list.
How to place a Conference Call on your Galaxy Note 5
- Tap Phone from any Home screen.
- Enter the number you want to call and then tap the Phone icon located at the bottom of the screen. Alternately, you can go to the Contacts tab, and then tap the contact number.
- If you want to call a number from your contacts, enter the first few letters of the contact name and then tap the matching contact details from the given list. Tap the Phone icon to make the call.
- Tap Add Call.
- Enter the contact name/number you’d like to add, and then tap the Phone icon.
- Tap Merge.
- To manage the call, tap Manage.
- To end the call, tap the End call icon next to the call you want to end.
- To finish the conference call, tap the End Call icon at the bottom of the screen.
How to Hide / Show your Phone Number
Just in case you don’t want others to see your number when you call, follow these steps to hide your phone number from the other party you’re calling to.
- Tap Phone from the Home screen.
- On the Phone screen, tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to and tap More settings.
- Tap Show my caller ID.
- Tap Hide number from the Show my caller ID pop-up screen.
To show your number again, follow these steps:
- Tap Phone from the Home screen.
- Tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to and tap More settings.
- Tap Show my caller ID.
- Tap to select Network default or Show number from the given options. Either way works the same.
More Phone Calling Tips
Your Galaxy Note 5 offers an extra volume mode for instances where the normal volume through the earpiece is not enough. While the quality of the standard volume is pretty audible, enabling the extra volume mode will augment the tone a little bit.
To avoid having in-call problems, be sure to adjust in call volume accordingly. You can press the Volume key up or down during the call. Don’t forget to check the call volume when using speaker when calling. Raising the call volume while on speaker may make calling difficult.
Avoid making a call in a noisy location to ensure voice clarity on both ends. Also ensure you have a strong signal in your location to prevent cutting off or popping sounds during a call.
