How To Fix NBA 2K22 Crashing On PS5 | NEW in 2023

One of the top games for the PS5 today is the NBA 2K22. While many would say that this year’s iteration is merely a “roster upgrade” of the previous version, there’s still a growing number of people who find the current game version as entertaining as the previous one. That is, in fact, an understatement as the game continues to rack up significant sales around the world.

But while NBA 2K22 is an obvious success story in terms of sales once again this year, just like any new games, there are reports of it crashing on many PS5 consoles. In this troubleshooting guide, we’ll explore how to fix this problem so go ahead and see what you need to do.

How to fix NBA 2K22 crashing on PS5?

For most people, their NBA 2K22 game runs without issues on their PS5, but others are not so lucky. We’ve been getting reports about some players who cannot play properly as the game keeps crashing on them. If you’re one of the unlucky few who experience crashes on NBA 2K22, these are the solutions that you can try:

Fix #1: Check for NBA 2K22 server problems.

Before you perform any troubleshooting steps, be sure to check the status of the game servers. This is an important consideration as you don’t want to waste your time and effort troubleshooting a problem you can’t fix.

New games tend to be buggy at first and sometimes game servers go down especially for popular games such as NBA 2K22. If the PS5 platform is currently having trouble with this game as shown in the official NBA 2K website, then you don’t need to continue troubleshooting at this time. It’s possible that the cause of the problem is caused by this issue so have it fixed first before proceeding.

Fix #2: Install game updates.

The next step that you want to do now is to ensure that the game client is running its latest version. If your PS5 is not connected to the internet all the time and you mainly play the game in offline mode only, be sure that the game client receives updates from time to time.

Updates not just bring new changes such as updated rosters, new features, and improved cosmetics but also patches for known bugs.

Fix #3: Update your PS5 firmware.

Just as important as updating the game is keeping the firmware of the console up-to-date. The PS5 software is not perfect and sometimes, game breaking bugs may develop. As new glitches are experienced by users, new updates are released to fix them so make sure that your console software is always current.

If you can’t connect your console to the internet all the time, we suggest that you perform a manual firmware update at this time.

Fix #4: Clear the system cache.

If the software environment of your PS5 is current, the next thing that you can do is to refresh the system cache. To do that, you want to turn off your PS5 first and then unplug it from the power source for 60 seconds. This should be enough time to clear its memory and hopefully fix the minor bug that causes the crashes.

Fix #5: Use Performance Mode.

Your PS5 offers two modes that you can use to improve either the visual quality of the game, or to ensure smooth gameplay. Although the NBA 2K22 PS5 version works fine in my console while on Resolution Mode, some players report that they were able to fix the crashes with Performance Mode on.

If the game continues to crash at this time, be sure to switch to Performance Mode before you run NBA 2K22 again. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your PS5 Home screen.
  2. Select the Settings icon (a small cog) on the top right side.
  3. Select Save Data and Game/App Settings.
  4. Select Game Presets, then make sure Performance Mode is selected.

Fix #6: Check for overheating.

Some people don’t know that their PS5 may not play games and may initiate a shut down of the system on its own if its overheating. Overheating usually occurs when the console’s ventilation is poor or non-existent, such as when its placed in an enclosed space, when it’s near a direct heat source, or when its vents are blocked.

The automatic shutdown happens in order to protect internal components from too much heat. So, if your PS5 continues to crash when playing NBA 2K22 or any game and it turns off on its own, you should consider checking if it’s becoming too warm. Be sure that you place it in a well-ventilated or cool place and allow it to cool off for a few hours before using it again.

Fix #7: Check the game disc for scratches or dirt.

If you have the physical copy of NBA 2K22, you want to check if the game disc is fine. Although your PS5  can tolerate certain degree of dirt or scratches, it may eventually cause random crashes if the disc is too dirty or scratched. Try to clean the game disc by wiping it with a soft cloth.

If you see any significant scratches or if there’s a crack, try loading the disc on another PS5. If the second console also fails to load the game, you have no other choice but to replace the disc.
