How to troubleshoot your Galaxy Note5 not receiving text from a particular contact

Is your #GalaxyNote5 not getting all incoming text messages? Check this short troubleshooting guide and see if it helps.

Problem #1: How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note5 not receiving text from a particular contact

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note5 that I have recently found out one of my contacts..who a week ago individually sent me a text message and it worked. Just yesterday he sent me 2 or 3 texts and I did not receive them. I found this out when I received a group text that someone else initiated and he was included and he said that I must’ve blocked him, but I hadn’t. So, I text him and I never received a individual response. He could text me in the group but not individually.

I tried deleting him as a contact and resaving him. I restarted my phone. Then today I turned my phone off for several minutes and turned back on and still doesn’t work. I asked him to call me and that works…so it’s just the SMS and only…well I hope…with him. Any ideas?

I was curious if I did the wiping the cache partition if that would help and if I did that would have have to back up or is that only for the the factory reset. Also…When he called me, it said I was in a totally different city. Anything with that either?? Thanks.

Solution: When you wipe the cache partition, you’re only dealing with a set of temporary files and folders, which are not part of permanent operating system directories. In other words, your device can survive without them. You can delete the cache partition without fear of losing something important. With factory reset, the opposite is true. While you won’t lose necessary default system files, folders, and apps, you’ll erase your data such as photos, videos, customizations, and third party apps. Before you factory reset, be sure to back your files up.

We’re not entirely sure what you mean by a caller saying you’re in a different city. Did he get an indication during the call that you are located somewhere where he thought you must be? The information may be machine-generated and may not be accurate. You have to talk to your carrier about this.

How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note5 not receiving text from a particular contact

There’s a number of possible reasons why your Note5 may not be getting messaging from a certain number. Let’s discuss each of them briefly and how to address each of them.

Check for messaging blocks

You may have nominated a contact’s number to be blocked. Try checking your messaging app’s settings for any possible blocks. Here’s how (steps applicable for Samsung Messages app only):

  1. Open Messages app.
  2. Tap More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap More settings.
  5. Tap Block messages.
  6. Make sure to check each of the items in this section: Block numbers, Block phrases, Blocked messages.

Wipe text messaging app data

The problem may be caused by a bug or block setting on your text messaging app. Try wiping the app’s data and see how it works. Follow these steps:

  1. Create a backup of your text messages using Smart Switch (if you don’t want to lose them).
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  5. Select Show system apps.
  6. Find and tap your app.
  7. Tap Storage.
  8. Tap Clear Data button.
  9. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

Use another text messaging app

Should wiping your text messaging app’s data won’t work, you can also use an alternate messaging app. Make sure to stick to official messaging apps like Google’s Android Messages to be safe.

Contact your network operator

If both solutions won’t help at all, be sure to let your carrier know so they can troubleshoot the problem with you. There may be an issue on their end preventing some of your messages from being forwarded to your device.

Problem #2: What to do if Galaxy Note5 is losing power fast after an update

I think I finally found the culprit to my 70 percent battery drain issue on my Galaxy Note5. After recent update my fingerprint suddenly didn’t register or my backup password but luckily I had it set to Swipe to open it but I cant lock it or get in there to change the backup password or the fingerprint that’s registered. It’s not a big deal bcuz I have my own security a trusty app lock, however it is draining my battery at a rapid pace. 70 percent and I am clueless how to fix it. And the screen keeps coming on all by itself. It had me thinking someone was watching me. lol

Apparently Samsung had this same issue back in 2016 from what I saw while googling for a solution but I’m not seeing recent reports.

Solution: Battery drain issue happens to all devices, but almost always to old or aging devices. If your Galaxy Note5 is over a year at this time, you should start noticing that the battery’s performance is no longer as good as it when the device was brandnew.

If there was a drastic battery performance drop right after installing an update however, you should try the troubleshooting steps below.

Wipe the cache partition

This is an important first troubleshooting step, especially if issues started to coincidentally occur following an Android update. At times, system updates may corrupt the system cache, which usually results to all sorts of issues. To ensure that your phone has fresh system cache, you want to clear the system cache with these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition”.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Keep your apps up-to-date

This is a basic but often forgotten maintenance step. In your case, you want to make sure that all of your apps are not just updated but also compatible. Most official apps from known publishers are compatible with the latest Android versions but some apps may not. It’s your responsibility to keep your apps updated and compatible. If you get apps from other sources outside the Play Store, pay close attention to them and ensure that they’re compatible. If you don’t know how to update them, contact their developers.

If all your apps are taken from the Play Store, be sure to update all of them (if you change the default setting that allows the app to download and install updates automatically). Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Play Store app.
  2. Tap More settings at the upper left (three-line icon).
  3. At the very top where you see the photo for the selected Google account, tap on the profile photo of the account you want to use.
  4. Once you’ve selected the profile you want, select My apps & games and update your apps.

Recalibrate Android and battery

Sometimes, Android may lose track of the actual battery levels. To recalibrate the operating system so that it gets accurate battery level readings, do the following:

    1. Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
    2. Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
    3. After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
    4. Restart the device.
    5. Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
    6. Repeat steps 1-5.

Factory reset

Wiping your phone’s software information and returning all settings to their defaults is an important troubleshooting in this situation. Make sure to back your phone’s data up first before doing the reset.

To factory reset your Note5:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
  10. Let the phone run for 24 hours without adding any apps.

Get a new battery

Should all the solutions above fail to resolve battery drain issue, replace the battery.
