How To Fix Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Calls Get Garbled

Problem: Myself and coworkers recently were given Samsung Galaxy note 8’s to use as our corporate phones.  All of a sudden for no specific reason, one of us (during conversation) will go garbled before becoming totally unable to be heard.  This happens, over Bluetooth, in office, while driving – everywhere! Mine definitely happens when home working on my laptop. Each of us are experiencing the exact frustrating issues.  Samsung said they have not heard of any issues…hard to believe. We have Verizon as a Carrier because….wait for it……we are ALL Verizon managers. No one in our IT department can help us.  Have you heard of this issue? Thanks in Advance. My son in law’s Samsung does the same thing with his Note 9.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the device it’s best to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available I suggest that you download and install it first.

Check the phone signal reception

Most issues affecting call quality are caused by the device not getting a good signal reception. Make sure your phone is getting full bars on the mobile signal strength. It’s a good idea to check if the issue occurs on a specific area or if it occurs in any area you are at to eliminate any network related problem.

Disable HD Voice

If you are using a 1X/3G Network Extender or a TTY/TDD device then it is not recommended to turn on HD voice as this could potentially cause issues.

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Go to Settings – Connections – Advanced Calling.
  • Tap the Advanced Calling switch (upper-right) to turn off
  • If presented, review the notification then tap OK to confirm.

Reset Network Settings

Sometimes resetting the network settings of the phone will help fix this problem. When you perform this step the following will happen

  • Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.
  • Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted.
  • Background data sync settings will be turned on.
  • Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.
  • Network selection mode will be set to automatic.

To reset the network settings

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.
  • Tap Reset settings.
  • If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  • Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.

Remove then Reinsert the SIM card

If the problem is caused by activation issues then this will help fix the problem.

  • Turn off the phone
  • From the top edge of the device (display facing up), remove the card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card from the tray.
  • Insert the card tray.
  • From the top edge of the device (display facing up), remove the card tray.
  • Insert the SIM card into the tray
  • Insert the card tray
  • Turn on the phone

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause issues with the call quality of the device. To check if this is what is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  • When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step that you should do is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that your phone data will be erased in the process so make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you will have to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
