How to fix Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus with Gallery that closes when taking pictures (easy steps)

How to fix Galaxy S9 Plus with Gallery app that closes when taking pictures
Most of the time, applications-related problems are not that complicated but in this case since the app in question is the Gallery which only crashes when the camera is used to take pictures, we really can’t be sure which the problem lies. So we have to troubleshoot your phone thoroughly to get this sorted out. Below are the solutions which may fix this problem…
First solution: Take pictures in Safe Mode
Running your phone in safe mode will immediately tell you if this problem is caused by one or some of the third-party apps you downloaded because in this mode, all third-party applications and services are temporarily disabled. So, if you can take pictures without the Gallery crashing, it’s confirmed that the cause of the problem is a third party. The next thing you should do is find that app and uninstall it.
Here’s how to reboot your phone in safe mode;
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
- When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.
And here’s how you uninstall applications from your device:
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Apps.
- Tap the desired application in the default list.
- To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
- Tap UNINSTALL > OK.
If the Gallery still crashes while in safe mode however, then try doing the next step.

Second solution: Clear cache and data of the Gallery
At this point, we need to find out if the problem is only with the Gallery by clearing its cache and data. Don’t worry, none of your pictures and videos will be deleted if you did this plus there’s a big chance the problem will be fixed:
- From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
- From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
- Tap App Manager.
- Locate then tap Gallery.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap CLEAR CACHE.
- Tap Cached data.
- Tap CLEAR.
After this, try to take pictures to find out if the app still crashes and if so, then try the next step.
Third solution: Reset Camera
You only have to do this if the problem can’t be fixed by clearing the cache and data of the Gallery. Just like the previous step, you also have to clear the cache and data of the Camera which will reset it back to its default settings and configuration. Considering that the problem occurs when you take pictures, there’s also a chance you can fix the problem with this one:
- From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
- From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
- Tap App Manager.
- Locate then tap Camera.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap CLEAR CACHE.
- Tap Cached data.
- Tap CLEAR.
Should the problem continue to bug you after this, then it’s time to troubleshoot the firmware.
Fourth solution: Wipe cache partition
The first thing you should do when you troubleshoot the firmware is to delete all system caches so they’ll be replaced with new ones because it could be that some of them got corrupted. Corrupt caches may also result to the crashing of apps regardless whether they’re pre-installed or third-party.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
- An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
- Press Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
If the error continues after this, then it’s time to reset your device.
Fifth solution: Backup important files and reset your phone
Before the reset however, make sure you backup all your files and data as they will be deleted during the process and you may not be able to retrieve them after that. After the backup, make sure you disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your google account from your phone so that you won’t be locked out. Once everything is set, follow these steps to reset your phone:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
