Today’s problem: Google Nexus 6P fast charging stopped working
Nexus 6p no longer quick charges. In fact it no longer charges using a usb-c to usb-c cable, not even the original cable that it came with. I am still able to charge it with usb-a to usb -c cables though. Unfortunately, that doesn’t quick charge it. Any ideas? I replaced the battery, but that didn’t fix it. How to fix Nexus 6P that’s not fast charging
Your Nexus’ fast charging capability requires some conditions in order to work. The operating system must be working normally to allow it, while the right charging cable and adapter must be used. If you can’t seem to undo the recent changes you’ve made to the device, or finds fast charging feature to have stopped inexplicably, this post might help you fix the problem. Make sure to check if quick charging feature works after doing each and every step.
Solution #1: Restart
Troubleshooting any electronic device or computer almost always starts with a basic restart. Your Nexus can benefit from this simple troubleshooting step as it unclogs memory and make the system to start fresh. It’s also a proven solution for some charging-related issues on this device. Of course, it’s also very easy to do and does not require much effort from you at all. To restart your Nexus, just do the following steps:
- Press and hold the Volume key.
- At the same time, press and hold On/Off until your phone is restarted.
Solution #2: Boot to safe mode
Third party apps, especially those that were poorly code, may interfere with the operating system. To see if a third party app is causing a problem, restart your Nexus 6P to safe mode and charge it. If quick charging feature works only on safe mode, that means an app is causing the problem.
There are two ways to restart your device to safe mode: when it’s on, and when it’s off.
To boot your Nexus 6P to safe mode when it’s ON:
- Press and hold your device’s power button.
- On your screen, touch and hold Power off Power. If needed, tap OK.
- Your device starts in safe mode. You’ll see “Safe mode” at the bottom of your screen.
To boot your Nexus 6P to safe mode when it’s OFF:
- Press your device’s power button.
- After the Google logo shows on your screen, when the animation starts, press and hold your device’s volume down button. Keep holding it until the animation ends and your device starts in safe mode.
- You’ll see “Safe mode” at the bottom of your screen.
Remember, safe mode won’t pinpoint the exact app that’s causing a problem. If fast charging feature works only on safe mode, you must uninstall third party apps until the cause is removed. Use the process of elimination to identify the problematic app. If you recently installed an app prior to noticing the problem, start by uninstalling that app to see what happens.
Solution #3: Use another charging cable and adapter
Using another charging cable and adapter is the next logical troubleshooting step that you can do in this case. Start by inspecting the current cable and adapter for signs of abuse — bents, scratches, obvious physical damage. If you can find any of these, get another set of charging cable or adapter for your Nexus and try that. Keep in mind that Google’s fast charging capability can’t make use third party fast chargers. This means that using non-Google fast charger won’t most likely output the necessary fast charging power your phone needs.
Solution #4: Factory/Master Reset
If the problem still exists at this point, it’s possible that there may be an issue with Android. Consider wiping the phone by doing a factory reset and see if that will change anything. Factory reset will delete your data such as photos, videos, etc. make sure to create a backup before you proceed.
- Open your device’s Settings app.
- Tap System and then Reset.
- Tap Factory data reset and then Reset phone or Reset tablet. If needed, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
- To erase all data from your device’s internal storage, tap Erase everything.
- When your device has finished erasing, pick the option to restart.
- Set up your device and restore your backed-up data.
Solution #5: Reflash the firmware
This is an optional troubleshooting step and only applies if your Nexus has been rooted or runs a custom ROM. If you were not the one who rooted or reflashed the firmware, use Google to find guides how to unroot or reflash stock firmware to it.
