How to fix a Samsung Galaxy A8 2019 smartphone that is not charging [Charging Tips and Troubleshooting Guide]

Charging issues in mobile devices are often tied to a damaged charging port in use, busted or incompatible charger, and also bad battery. But in most cases, the underlying cause is on the software. What usually occurs is that something is preventing the phone’s charging system from carrying out its charging routine as intended. And that “something” often refers to a system glitch. One good example of this is when a faulty update is installed and then suddenly the phone refuses to charge. Bad apps are also among the main culprits especially those that consume a significant amount of power from your device. And this is the main issue that’s tackled in this post, particularly on the Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 smartphone variant. If you own the same device and you’re here because it is not charging for some reasons, then you might as well consider reading this entire content for some inputs.

How to fix Galaxy A8 2018 that won’t charge

Before you start troubleshooting software problems on your phone, refer to these subsequent charging tips to make sure the problem is not due to any of these factors.

  • Use only the OEM/original charger. Other chargers may not work because they are not compatible with your phone. While some third-party charging equipment may work, they don’t usually render the same or required power outputs. So your phone may still be able to charge using them but perhaps slower than when using the original charger. This however will eventually inflict damage to your phone’s charging system with long time usage. And it is also the main reason why smartphone manufacturers strongly recommend the use of original chargers.
  • Verify no damage to your charging equipment. Examine both ends of the charging cable and the cable itself for any visible signs of damage. If you’re using an adapter, make sure it’s working too. You can try alternative compatible chargers to see if your phone will charge using other chargers. This will help you isolate whether or not the problem is on the charger you are using.
  • Ensure that the power source is working. If possible, charge from a wall outlet. This will ensure that your phone is getting the right amount of power from the source. While you may use other power sources like a computer or power accessories, the output power they render may not be as high as that from the main outlet. Thus, your phone will likely be charging very slowly. Also try switching between power outlets to rule busted sources from the possible causes.
  • Avoid using your phone while charging. If you’re charging your phone while it still has some power left, don’t use your device. There is a higher chance that it won’t charge especially if you’re using heavy apps. These apps may be too complex that they’re already using up much power than your phone gets from the source. If possible, turn off your phone until it gets fully charged.

Troubleshooting software errors that inflict charging issues

Here’s a rundown of a few helpful procedures you can try on when troubleshooting software errors on your phone that might have prevented it’s charging system from carrying out its usual operation.

First solution: Force your phone to restart (soft reset).

Forcing your device to restart can help fix any minor apps glitches that might have caused the charging system to misbehave or stop working. You can force your device to restart while it’s on or while charging. Either way can help rectify the glitch by forcibly ending all rogue apps and processes and refreshing the phone’s charging system as well. Here’s what you should do then:

  • Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously for about 10 seconds or until your device power cycles.

A force restart is a simulated battery removal procedure that does the same as the usual reboot but done using the hardware keys. This will not affect any data you stored on the internal memory so it won’t cause data loss.

Second solution: Quit all background apps (if applicable).

If your phone still has a little power left to operate, try to quit all background apps first. Any of these apps might be the culprit especially when they crash or go rogue as well.

  1. To do so, tap the Recent Apps key do display all apps you’ve recently accessed and haven’t closed. Scroll through the apps. You can individually close these apps by dragging the apps to either side of the screen.
  2. Alternatively, you can tap the X in the upper-right corner of any app to close it. To close all background apps at once, tap the option to Close All instead.

Menu options may vary between Android versions but generally that’s how it works.

Third solution: Charge your phone while in safe mode (if applicable).

This solution is again only applicable if your phone still has power left to operate. Booting your device into safe mode can help you determine if the problem is caused by a third-party app or not. All third-party apps and services are temporarily disabled in this mode so it would be easier to determine problems between stock and downloaded apps.

Here’s how to boot your Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 into safe mode:

  1. Power off or shut down your phone by pressing and holding the Power button for a few seconds or press the Power button once and select the option to Power Off.
  2. Wait for a few seconds until your phone shuts down completely.
  3. Then, turn your phone on again by pressing the Power button.
  4. When you see the Samsung logo, press and hold the Volume Down button until you see the Safe mode badge on the left corner of your phone screen.
  5. Now try to charge your device while in safe mode.

If it’s able to charge in this mode, it means that any of your downloaded/third-party apps is the culprit and that’s what you need to find out. Try to think of which apps you’ve downloaded recently is causing the issue. The bad app has to be removed in order to let your phone charge as it normally does.

Repair options

You may have to consider opting for repair or service if none of the above-mentioned procedures is able to fix the problem and that your Samsung Galaxy A8 2018 device still won’t charge. Unfortunately, you only have a few options to work on given that your device is already low on power, if not completely drained and dead. In that case, you may opt to escalate the issue first to your carrier or Samsung Support especially if it happens after installing a new update. That way they can do some further assessment on their end and possibly include it among other priority issues to fix in the next update.

Alternatively, you can take your device to the nearest Samsung service center in your area and have it diagnosed by an authorized technician. There might be some sort of physical or liquid damage on the phone that’s causing you this problem and therefore needs to be dealt with first. Also have your charger assessed by a technician to ensure that it’s working. Don’t forget to avail for warranties if your phone is still covered or eligible.
