Sometimes, voice calling may stop working all of a sudden. In this troubleshooting episode, we cover a case of an LG G7 ThinQ that is unable to receive calls. Find out the steps that you can do to fix it below.

Problem: LG G7 ThinQ can’t receive calls

Can’t receive calls. Goes directly to voice mail. I’ve entered *730 code to reset phone, soft reset and have done a safe check. But to no avail. Any advice would be grateful.

Solution: There’s a number of things to check if you wish to fix this issue. Refer to the suggestions below on the troubleshooting steps that you can do in this situation.

Verify if SMS or Mobile data is working

If SMS or mobile data are not working as well, there might be an issue with your account with your network operator. In this state, the best thing that you can do is to contact them. There’s no point doing device troubleshooting when it’s an apparently account problem to begin with. If SMS and cellular data work though, continue with the suggestions below.

Cache partition wipe

Sometimes, a corrupted system cache can cause problems. Android uses a set of temporary files to load apps faster called system cache. If this cache becomes outdated or corrupted, the phone may encounter performance problem, app crashes, and other sorts of problems. To see if a corrupted system cache is to blame, follow the steps below to clear the cache partition.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  3. Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  4. Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  5. Tap Free up space.
  6. Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  7. Select the following options:
  8. Cached data
  9. Clip tray temporary files
  10. Raw files from camera
  11. Tap Delete > DELETE.

Install app and system updates

The next good thing to do here is to ensure that all apps, especially the one that’s having a problem, is up-to-date. This is one way of minimizing the chance of a bug from developing. To do that, make sure to regularly visit Google Play Store and update your apps from there. By default, the Play Store app should download updates automatically. If you prevent the app from downloading updates on its own, be sure to regularly check for them from time to time.

The same should be true for Android updates. Be sure that you check for any Android or carrier updates. Some network troubles like this one can sometimes be caused by a firmware bug or poor coding. Carriers are responsible for updating the firmware if the fault lies on their end. Patches are bundled with regular Android updates so you want to install system updates as soon as they become available.

Clear cache of Phone app

There’s a chance that the problem may be coming from a corrupted cache of the Phone app. This app is responsible for handling incoming and outgoing calls. Try to wipe its cache to see if there’s a difference. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the ‘General’ tab > Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap App info.
  4. Tap the filter to select the following: All, Enabled, Disabled
  5. Tap the desired app, then Storage.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Hit YES to confirm.

Reset Phone app to its default settings

One way of directly dealing with a possible app issue is by clearing its data. This procedure will return the app to its factory state. If a bug has developed due to incorrect app configuration, this might help. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the ‘General’ tab > Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap App info.
  4. Tap the filter to select the following: All, Enabled, Disabled
  5. Tap the desired app, then Storage.
  6. Tap Clear data.
  7. Hit YES to confirm.

Try another Phone app

Should the issue is still there at this point, the next good troubleshooting to do is to find out if your LG G7 ThinQ can start receiving calls again after when using a different Phone app. There are many apps that you can use for this purpose. Apps like Facebook Messenger, Google Phone, Cisco Jabber or any other similar apps can be installed from the Play Store. Make sure that once the selected app has been installed, you make it as the default app when making or receiving voice calls.

To select a default app for a particular action, go to Settings > App & notifcations > Default apps.

Reset network settings

There may be a network setting or settings that has been modified before this problem started. To ensure that your LG G7 ThinQ has all the right network configuration, we suggest that you do the following:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Restart & reset.
  3. Tap Network settings reset.
  4. Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  5. Tap Reset Settings.

Factory reset

Factory reset is a drastic solution in this case but it may be the only effective way to fix the problem at this stage. Make sure to create a backup of your files or data before doing it.

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  4. When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  5. When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  6. Press the Power button to reset the device

Contact network operator

Should nothing change after wiping the phone with factory reset, you should let your network operator know about the problem. Voice calling problems is not entirely dependent on your device. Calls can also be affected by issues from the network or account side. Make sure to emphasize the fact that you’ve already tried all the troubleshooting steps on your device so your carrier won’t ask you to do them again.
