How to Fix Instagram Not Sending SMS Security Code

Not receiving the SMS security code from Instagram locks you out of your account. These methods will help you get the verification code and regain access.

Method 1: Wait and Retry

  1. Wait at least 60 seconds before requesting a new code.
  2. Tap Resend code on the verification screen.
  3. SMS delivery can be delayed during high traffic periods.
  4. Try up to 3 times with a minute gap between each attempt.

Method 2: Check Your Phone Number

  1. Make sure the phone number on your Instagram account is correct and active.
  2. Verify that your phone has cellular signal and can receive regular SMS texts.
  3. Ask someone to send you a text to confirm SMS is working.
  4. If you recently changed numbers, update it in Instagram settings from a logged-in session.

Method 3: Use Email Verification Instead

  1. On the login screen, tap Get help logging in.
  2. Enter your username or email address.
  3. Choose Send an email instead of SMS.
  4. Check your email inbox (and spam folder) for the verification link.
  5. Use the link to log in and update your security settings.

Method 4: Use an Authentication App

  1. If you have access to your account, go to Settings > Security > Two-factor authentication.
  2. Switch from SMS to Authentication app (Google Authenticator or Authy).
  3. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app.
  4. This is more reliable than SMS and doesn’t depend on carrier delivery.

Method 5: Contact Instagram Support

  1. Go to the Instagram login page and tap Get help logging in.
  2. Tap I can’t access this email or phone number.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity.
  4. Instagram may ask for a selfie video to confirm your identity.
  5. Wait for Instagram to review and restore access to your account.
