Troubleshooting Galaxy S10 that shows the Play Store error 940 when installing apps

In troubleshooting software issues like this, you have to be thorough to avoid data loss. A reset will be able to fix this problem but there are also other solutions that could help you without deleting your files and data. That’s what we have to do first and if the problem continues after exhausting all possible solutions, then you have to do the reset. With that said, here are the things you need to do to try and fix the error 940 on your phone:

First Solution: Perform the Forced restart

The first thing you have to do is to perform the forced restart. This will rule out the possibility that this problem is just due to a minor firmware issue or even just a glitch. A forced restart will refresh your phone’s memory as well as reload all its apps and services. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy S10 logo shows on the screen.

Once the phone finishes restarting, open the Play Store and try downloading any app to see if the error 940 continues to occur. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Second Solution: Reset the Play Store App

App-related issues often occur if the cache and data are corrupt or outdated. So, at this point, we have to delete those old files and data so that brand new ones will be replaced, and your Play Store app will be back to its default settings and configuration. Don’t you worry, none of your apps will be deleted during the process.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Google Play Store.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear cache.
  7. Touch Clear data and then tap OK to confirm.
  8. After the Play Store reset, restart your phone to refresh the memory.
  9. Restart your phone to release some RAM.

After the reboot, open the Play Store and download an app. If the Play Store error 940 still pops up, move on to the next solution.

Third Solution: Reset Network Settings

It is important that your phone has a stable internet connection. One possibility why error 940 occurs is that the connection may have been interrupted during the installation. As a result, the download process was halted and resulted to the error. To rule out this possibility, reset the network settings of your Galaxy S10 and here’s how you do that:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and tap General management.
  4. Touch Reset.
  5. Tap Reset network settings.
  6. Tap Reset settings.
  7. If prompted, enter your PIN, Password or Pattern.
  8. Finally, tap Reset.

Once the network reset is done, let your phone reconnect to you network and then open the Play Store and try downloading an app. If the problem continues or if the error 940 still shows up, then try the next solution.

Fourth solution: Wipe cache partition

As I said earlier, a reset will fix this problem but before doing that, there’s one procedure I need you to do and that’s to wipe the cache partition. It will delete and replace the system cache. There are times when the cache gets corrupted and when it happens, performance issues may occur or any other form of errors including error 940 when you download apps from the Play Store. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy S10 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy S10 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once the phone has successfully rebooted, open the Play Store and try downloading any app to see if the error 940 still pops up. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Fifth Solution: Do a Master Reset

This is the ultimate fix to this problem provided that the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way. But before doing the procedure, make sure to create a copy of your important files and data as they will be deleted, especially ones that are saved in your phone’s internal storage. After the backup, remove your Google and Samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out. Once everything is in order, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
