How to fix Messenger that keeps crashing on Galaxy A7

The purpose of this troubleshooting guide is to fix the problem so you could continue using Messenger without having to deal with the crashes. You can immediately get rid of the problem by uninstalling the app but that’s not the real solution, isn’t it? A phone like the A7 should be able to run any app without having any issues and with that being said, here’s what I suggest you do about this problem…

Reboot your phone – before anything else, make sure you reboot your phone because maybe this is just a result of a minor firmware glitch. You have to do it especially if this is the first time the problem occurred. If a normal reboot doesn’t work, try the forced restart: press and hold the volume down and power keys at the same time for 10 seconds or more.

Clear cache and data of Messenger – if the problem continues after a reboot or forced restart, you need to go after the app that crashes. Reset it by clearing off its caches and data. This will bring the app back to its default settings and configuration. If this is just a problem with the app, this will fix it.

Uninstall Messenger and reinstall it – after clearing the cache and data of the app and it continues to crash, it’s time to make sure you have the latest version of the app running on your phone but instead of updating it, it’s better to just uninstall it and then re-download it from the Play Store.

If necessary, you may have to reset your phone to give it a fresh start. You may have to set the device up again after the reset but I’m certain it will fix the problem. This is how you reset your phone:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  5. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  6. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  7. Press Power button to select.
  8. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  9. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  10. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  11. Press the Power key to restart the device.
