How to fix a Huawei Mate 10 Pro smartphone that cannot make or receive phone calls [Troubleshooting Guide]

There are a lot of factors that you need to consider looking into when dealing with calling issues on your smartphone. From your account status to network status, settings, apps, contacts, and even the SIM card in use. All these along with other attributes are to be regarded among the underlying causes.

The first thing you should check whenever you’ll bump into an issue in which your device cannot make or receive phone calls is the network status of your phone. Does your phone have stable or strong network coverage (signal)?

To find out, check the signal bars or indicators on your phone. If it shows at least a single bar but stable, then you’re good. Otherwise, you’ll need to find other ways to make your phone obtain good signal from your network. If the signal is good and yet you still cannot make or receive phone calls, check your account and network service status. This means contacting your network service provider or carrier.

First solution: Restart your phone (soft reset).

Should the problem be triggered by random software glitches or application errors, performing a soft reset or restarting the phone will likely fix it. If you haven’t already, soft reset or restart your Huawei Mate 10 Pro with these steps:

Press the Power button for a few seconds or until the menu options appear.
Select Power off option and then tap OK. Doing so will shut down your phone.
After 30 seconds, press the Power button again until your device restarts.

A soft reset does not affect any data stored on the internal memory of the phone, thus all your personal files will remain intact afterwards.

Second solution: Boot your phone in safe mode.

Safe mode is where you can diagnose apps easily and determine whether or not the problem is triggered by a third-party app on your device. All downloaded apps are bypassed and not permitted to run in safe mode, thus only the preinstalled apps are running. Turn off your phone by pressing the Power button until it shuts down.
Then press the Power button again to turn it back on.
As soon as you see the Huawei animation screen, press and hold the Volume Down button until your phone boots up.

When it’s finished booting up, you should see Safe Mode at the bottom left corner of the screen. This means that the phone is already running in safe mode.

If your device is able to make and receive phone calls while running in safe mode, this denotes that any of your third-party apps may be interfering with the network connection of your phone. In that case, you will need to determine which app is the culprit and then remove it. It’s likely the one you’ve downloaded prior to the onset of the problem. Third solution: Toggle Flight Mode on and off.

You won’t be able to make or receive phone calls, send or receive messages or access mobile data if Flight mode is enabled on your device. To make sure this isn’t what’s halting you from making or getting phone calls, check and ensure that Flight mode is turned off. If it’s already off/disabled, try to turn it on shortly and then on again. Here’s how it’s done:

Slide your two fingers downwards from the top of the Home screen. Doing so will open the Notifications panel.
Tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn the feature on for a few seconds then tap the icon again to turn Airplane Mode off.

This trick somehow refreshes and restarts network functions on the phone and therefore resolves minor software glitches attributed to network errors.

Fourth solution: Remove and reinstall SIM card on your phone.

Make sure the SIM card is not dirty or damaged. SIM card issues like defective or damaged SIM card, may also be the main reason why you won’t be able to make and receive phone calls on your phone. To clear this out, try to remove and reinstall the SIM card on your phone with these steps:

Power off your device.
Locate the SIM slot on the left side and the insert the SIM ejection tool or a bent paper clip into the small hole.
Gently push it until the SIM tray ejects.
Remove the SIM tray carefully.
Then take the SIM card off from the card slot. Examine the card for any signs of damage like scratches. If the SIM card is dirty, clean it gently with a dry cloth. If you suspect that the SIM card is damaged, contact your service provider/carrier and then ask for a replacement SIM card instead.
If everything looks good with the SIM card, place it back into the SIM card slot with the gold contacts facing downwards.
Secure the SIM card in the slot and then push the SIM tray back into the phone.
Push the slide back on your phone and then lightly push on it until it snaps into place.

When the SIM tray is secured and locked in place, turn on your phone and then try to see if the problem is fixed and your phone is already able to make and receive phone calls.

Fifth solution: Reset network settings on your phone.

A network settings reset will wipe all your current network settings and selections then restore the default network settings on your phone. This can be the key to fixing the issue if invalid or incorrect network settings have something to do with it. To give it a try, follow these steps to reset network settings on your Huawei Mate 10 Pro:

Tap Settings from the main Apps screen.
Scroll to and tap Advanced Settings.
Scroll to and tap select Backup & Reset option.
Then select Network settings reset.
Tap Network settings reset again to confirm.

Your device will then instigate the network settings reset process and then reboots automatically when done. After the restart, you can set up and enable network services on your phone. Wait until your device re-establishes network connections and then test to see if calling functions are already working as intended.

Other options

You may continue to troubleshoot and resort to a last-ditch solution which is a master reset or factory data reset.
