How To Fix The Huawei P20 Pro Battery Drains Quickly

Problem: As is typical, P20 Pro (only a few months old) had awesome battery usage and very slow drain time…. until this most recent update last weekend! Now it’s draining as fast as my old phone did after 3 years! I turn off my wifi when not in use, along with location and bluetooth. I also keep my brightness mode at the lowest setting that would still allow decent screen viewing. I also utilize my device maintenance tool regularly to enhance my battery usage and close/ sleep all apps that aren’t currently needed. Any way to get my good battery performance back again or uninstall this most recent update?

Solution: If the battery drain problem occured right after a software update then this is most likely caused by a software glitch. Follow the troubleshooting steps listed below to fix the problem.

Update your phone apps

Your phone might be running on outdated apps which are not working efficiently with the new software version. There might be apps that are constantly making the processor of the phone work even when it is not needed thus causing the battery drain problem. To update your phone apps just open the Google Play Store then check if any of your apps have an update available.

Start the P20 Pro in Safe Mode

There are instances when certain apps installed in your phone can cause this problem. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Power off the device
  • Power it back on
  • When you see the Huawei animation on the screen press and hold volume down button
  • You can see safe mode at the bottom left corner once the device finishes booting

Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the P20 Pro

There are instances when the temporary system data of the phone will get corrupted, When this happens it can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of your phone.

  • Turn off your  device.
  • Wait for few seconds until your phone completely turned off.
  • Press and hold Volume UP button along with Power button on your device simultaneously for a while
  • The phone will enter the stock recovery mode
  • Use volume buttons to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’ and use power key to select it
  • Reboot the system once the process is completed

Factory reset the P20 Pro

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Turn off your  device.
  • Wait for few seconds until your phone completely turned off.
  • Press and hold Volume UP button along with Power button on your device simultaneously for a while
  • The phone will enter the stock recovery mode
  • Use volume buttons to highlight “wipe data/factory reset”  and use power key to select it
