Here’s the list of the problem you can find in this article…

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge screen turned black all of the sudden, won’t turn back on

Problem: I own a Galaxy S7 Edge that I purchased a few months ago. Everything went well, actually, until one day the screen just turned off or black and stayed that way for a couple of days. I was already panicking as I didn’t know what to do but two days later, the phone just displayed the Home screen. The same problem happened yesterday and now the screen is black, won’t turn back on and the phone won’t even charge. I thought the phone is powered down but it actually plays the message tone or rings when someone calls. So, it’s powered up and only the screen is powered off. What must I do to fix the problem?

Troubleshooting: For this problem alone, we have to look into a few things. The first is the apps. There’s a possibility that it’s caused by an app or a group of apps that keeps crashing that may also result to the crashing of the firmware.

The second thing we have to consider is the corruption of caches and data, which may occur during a firmware update. More often the phone would be stuck during boot up if some of the caches or data got corrupted but there were also reports wherein the screen is the one that’s greatly affected and this kind of problem may happen.
Lastly, there’s the possibility of a hardware issue wherein the display panel is no longer working the way it should. A technician is needed to diagnose it properly as tests will be done to figure out what the problem really is and what course to take to fix it.

With all that being said, I suggest you follow the step-by-step guide in troubleshooting a black and unresponsive screen with the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Step 1: Force reboot your phone to rule out the possibility of a system crash

Press and hold the Volume Down button and then press and hold the Power key. Keep both of them held down for 10 seconds until the phone reboots. If the problem was indeed caused by a firmware crash and if there’s enough battery to power it up, then the phone should reboot normally.

The Forced Reboot procedure is equivalent to the battery pull procedure that many owners of devices with removable batteries know about. It’s very effective in addressing problems caused by minor system issues such as this.

Step 2: Try charging your phone to rule out the possibility of drained battery

I understand you said the phone is powered up and only the screen is turned off but for owners who don’t have the same case as yours, it’s better that you try to charge the phone. Actually, you’re not just charging the phone for power’s sake, you’re also trying to find out how the phone responds if there’s current flowing through its circuits.

If the phone has a problem with its hardware, it may not be able to charge nor detect the current. Instead, it will remain unresponsive and the screen black.

Step 3: Run the phone in different modes

In this step, you are trying to find out if the phone is still capable of powering up its components. When the phone is booted up in safe mode, all third-party apps and services will be temporarily disabled. So, if the problem is caused by one or a group of third-party apps, the handset should be able to boot up without any problems. Here’s how you boot your S7 Edge in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

On the other hand, if the problem is booted up in Recovery Mode, the Android interface is disabled so if the problem is with the front end, then your S7 Edge will be able to boot up in this mode successfully. This is how you do it..

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.

If the phone refuses to boot up in safe and recovery modes, then it’s time you send it in for checkup or possible repair. The technician may re-install or re-flash the firmware if the problem is caused by corrupt files and data. However, if the problem is due to a serious hardware problem, then everything depends on the findings of the tests.
