Snapchat has stopped error explained

The error simply means that the Snapchat app crashed and it may be caused by other apps that also crashed and affected its normal operation, a minor firmware issue that affected some apps or a hardware problem that greatly affects the general performance of the phone.

This problem ranges from a minor app issue to serious firmware and/or hardware problems. That’s why it’s necessary to do thorough troubleshooting to determine what the culprit is and eventually fix it.

Since the error message explicitly mentions the app that crashes, it is wise to begin your troubleshooting by going after the problematic app. Then, you go up to the firmware level if app level troubleshooting won’t work. As to the hardware issue, there’s nothing can actually do about it except send the phone in for checkup and repair.

How to troubleshoot the error message

While this troubleshooting guide is drafted for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, it can also be used for other Android phones that also have this error message. The following steps are merely suggestions. You may follow them,  you may not but this is how you troubleshoot app related issues.

Step 1: Try to find out if there’s an update available for the app

If the problem is widespread and considering Snapchat is backed by a big pool of developers, an update may have already been rolled out to patch the problem. Therefore, it must be the first thing you should find. Launch Google Play Store, go to My Apps and try to see if there’s an update. If there is, download and update the app.

It is important you do this procedure before anything else as it may save you from a lot trouble. You’re not required to backup your data when you update an app as the new version will be installed flawlessly.

Step 2: Isolate the problem to know if the firmware has something to do with it

Snapchat is a third-party app so it will be temporarily disabled if the device is booted up in safe mode, however, you can still launch it from that state. If the error still shows up, then the problem must be with the app itself or with the firmware. Here’s how you boot your device in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Step 3: Clear Snapchat’s cache and data

You do this if the app still crashes in safe mode. Clearing the cache and its data means to reset the app to its default settings by getting rid of user preferences as well as every bit of data the app has acquired during the time the user used it.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Snapchat.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.

Step 4: Uninstall and re-install Snapchat

You only do this if there’s no available update, the update didn’t fix the problem and if the error still shows up after clearing the app’s cache and data.

The purpose of this step is to make sure you have the most recent or fresh copy of the app from the Play Store. However, you need to clear the cache and data (if you haven’t already) before uninstalling the app just to make sure no trace of the app remains.

Step 5: Delete the system cache

If you’ve done steps 1 through 4 and the issue remains, then it might be an issue with the firmware especially if it was updated recently. The system cache is always the first one that gets corrupted and it may cause a lot of trouble including app crashes. At this point though, we have no proof that it really is the culprit but we would like to exhaust all possibilities to make sure we don’t miss a thing. Here’s how you delete the system cache:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Step 6: If it’s worth it, perform the master reset

If Snapchat is something you can’t live without, then you have to do everything to fix it. You’ve already tried to update it, cleared its cache and data, uninstalled and reinstalled it and deleted the system cache to no avail. At this point, we might be looking at some corrupt data or a serious hardware problem. So, to rule out the possibility of a firmware issue, a master reset is necessary.

  1. Backup your data.
  2. Remove your Google account.
  3. Disengage screen lock.
  4. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  5. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.

NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.

  1. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  2. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.

NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.

  1. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  2. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  3. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  4. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  5. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Step 7: If all else fails, report the problem to the developer

Reporting the issue to the developer won’t fix it immediately but, at least, they know that some users are experiencing issues with their app. By mentioning the model of your phone, the version of Android it’s running on and the troubleshooting procedures you’ve already done, they might have some suggestions on how to fix it.

Other app related issues with Galaxy S7 Edge

Q: “Hi guys. I just downloaded an app from the Play Store and immediately after its installation, an error message popped up saying “Unfortunately, the app has stopped.” My phone is the new Galaxy S7 Edge and so far, I haven’t encountered issues with it other than this. I really am not a tech person so I don’t want to mess things up by doing things I’m uncertain of. So, if you guys could suggest what I need to do to fix this, I would surely appreciate it. Thanks.

A: It could have been more helpful for us if you mentioned the name of the app you’re having problem with. We can’t just assume things while troubleshooting. For instance, we really can’t assume you’re having issues with Facebook in this case or Twitter. Doing so will lead to inaccurate solution or troubleshooting guide.

However, we advice you to follow the troubleshooting guide I drafted above. Or you can uninstall the app to get rid of the error message. If it didn’t work after the installation, then it must be incompatible with the system. It will only cause you trouble than service. In other words, the app is useless.

Q: “I use the stock email app on the Galaxy S7 Edge to connect to my Yahoo mail account. Every single email I open, I have to press load more and show images. I can’t find anywhere to change settings on this. I can’t find anywhere to contact anybody to get any help. And any apps that I load to do Yahoo email on has a ridiculous amount of ads whereas this app does not have any ads at all, so I’d like to use it. Can you help?

A: There is a setting for that. Go to Apps > Settings > Applications > Email and find Show images option. It allows you to set the app to automatically download images upon receipt. Then there’s the Auto download attachments option that you can enable to automatically save files attached to email messages to your phone.

By the way, Yahoo has an official email client for Android devices. Why not use that instead of installing other third-party email clients?

Q: “I’ve set up my Gmail account, and added my msn.com email account, and not cannot find it.  If I try to add it again, it gives me a ‘failed’ notification. How do I find my msn.com email account?

A: Are you sure you successfully added your MSN account? It’s difficult for us to determine what the problem with your phone or email app is and I understand you successfully added your Gmail account. However, if the other account is important to you, then you should clear the cache and data of the Email app and try to set it up before setting up your Gmail account.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Email.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.
