Both the Camera and the Messages apps are preinstalled. Meaning, they already exist there in your phone the first time you turned it on. The most common issue with apps is that they often crash without apparent reason and more often than not they are represented with the error message “Unfortunately, app name has stopped.”

This post is divided into two sections that tackle two different error messages. The first is “Unfortunately, Camera has stopped,” which is referring to the default application you use when taking photos or recording videos. While it is obvious the error is talking about the app itself, I just want to put emphasis on the fact that other apps are also using the Camera apps. Applications like the Gallery, Facebook, Instagram, etc. have permissions to use the camera. My point is, they might also be the reason why the app crashes.

The second error is “Unfortunately, Messages has stopped,” which speaks of the default messaging app that crashed for some reason. Just like the camera app, the messages app is also used by other apps not to mention the overlapping permission if the user downloads and installs third-party messaging applications. Read on to understand more about these error messages and learn how to fix them or how to troubleshoot your device to get rid of these problems.

How to fix “Unfortunately, Camera has stopped” error on Galaxy S7 Edge

Problem: Droid guy, I need your help. I own the S7 Edge unit and I really can’t say that I did enjoy using it because since day 1 I already encountered a couple of problems. Those issues continue to haunt me until I had it checked and got resolved. One of the problems, however, that recently happened is a bit serious since I could no longer use the camera of my phone because every time I open it, an error that says “Unfortunately, Camera has stopped” would pop up and when I touch OK, the camera closes together with the error. Can you shed some light as to this problem? How can I fix it? — JB

Troubleshooting: The camera is one of the very complex components of the phone. The sensor needs to work flawlessly and in sync with its app all the time. In other words, the coordination with the hardware, the firmware and the app must be perfect, otherwise, the error message cited above may pop up. For this problem, we need to go after the Camera app first and then go after other apps that may have caused or triggered the problem.

Step 1: For first time occurrence, reboot your phone

If this is the first time the problem occurred, don’t do anything yet. Instead, just reboot your phone and see if the problem gets fixed. A simple reboot can fix minor hardware, firmware and app glitches so it’s imperative you do this first of all.

It would also be a good idea if you force reboot your device to simulate the virtual battery disconnect (this is equivalent of battery pull) to refresh the phone’s memory.

After the reboot, try to snap some pictures to see if the error still pops up, and if so, the next step is necessary.

Step 2: Reboot your Galaxy S7 Edge in Safe Mode

We don’t know for now if the problem is caused by a third-party or pre-installed apps so we need to isolate the problem to have an idea what the culprit is. Follow these steps to continue…

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

While in this state, try to open the camera again to find out if the error still shows up and if so, try to reset the app itself by clearing its cache and data.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Camera.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.

After clearing the cache and data, try to open the camera app again. If the problem remains, it’s time you went after the firmware.

Step 3: Boot your S7 Edge in Recovery Mode and wipe cache partition

Caches are expendables; you can freely delete them and not worry about any adverse effects. So, in going after the firmware, deleting the system cache and wiping the cache partition should be the first thing you should do. These files will be replaced during the next boot up after you’ve deleted them. Here’s how you do it.

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If the problem remains after deleting the system cache, then a reset is inevitable.

Step 4: Perform the Master Reset on your Galaxy S7 Edge

This procedure often comes last because of the hassle it entails but when you’ve done everything without any favorable results, then I know you are willing to do this.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
