How to fix an LG V30 that gets stuck on black screen, only showing a blank display (easy steps)

A problem about your LG V30 smartphone being stuck on black or blank display usually denotes a software issue but can also be regarded among the symptoms of hardware damage. It can be regarded as a software issue if it suddenly occurs without any prior instances of dropping or liquid exposure on your device. A common trigger is a faulty software update or bad apps you’ve recently downloaded and installed on your phone. Symptoms that started to show up after installing an update are likely due to a software bug, which can come along with the new firmware. If this is the case, what you’re dealing with is a post-update issue that’s typically resolved by an official fix patch embedded into the next firmware update.

Your phone can also be stuck on black screen due to a system crash. Just like when you’re multitasking with your device and all of a sudden the screen freezes then shuts down by itself. So you would attempt to start it up but nothing happens because something is preventing your device from booting up. That something could be a rogue app, a corrupt data, software bug or malware that’s afflicting the phone system and hindering it from carrying out a normal boot-up routine.

Assuming that the problem you are dealing with is software-related, you may attempt to fix the problem on your end by performing any applicable workarounds and possible solutions. Potential solutions to black or blank screen problem on your LG V30

A systematic troubleshooting approach when dealing with software-related issues in mobile devices begins with determining the root cause. This means that you need to think of what has happened before your LG V30 gets stuck on a black or blank screen. For example, did it start to occur after you downloaded a new game app or software update? Or did it instigated after applying new changes to your phone settings, particularly with the display attributes? Doing so will help you find out where to start and what to do in order to resolve the issue. However, this may not be possibly achieved in all instances. In fact, your device can just act weird without making any changes on it. This is where a trial-and-error troubleshooting approach plays its role. Consider these subsequent methods among your options whenever you’ve decided and all set to troubleshoot the problem on your end.

First method: Forced restart.

A forced restart is the first recommended solution to unresponsive or frozen devices. It’s a simulated battery removal process. But given that the LG V30 battery is not removable, you can do a forced restart using the hardware keys instead. Here’s how it’s done:

Press and hold the Power button (or fingerprint scanner) and Volume Down button simultaneously for 8 seconds. Your phone will then vibrate, shut down, and reboot.

This method usually fixes minor software issues transpiring in mobile devices without affecting any data stored on your phone’s internal memory. Basically, it works the same as a soft reset only that you forced the device to reboot through the hardware key combos.

Second method: Connect your LG V30  to a charger and let it charge.

When your phone does nothing and shows nothing but a black display, chances are you would immediately think that it’s damaged. But the truth is, your phone might just have ran out of power completely and therefore no longer able to power up. With that said, try to connect your phone to its charger then allow it to charge for at least 20 to 30 minutes. It can take longer for the charging indicator to show up especially if the battery was totally drained before charging. Also make sure that your phone is able to charge properly. You can try using a different charger for your LG V30 or use other power sources available to ensure that the problem you’re dealing with is not associated with a faulty charger or power outlet.

Third method: Try performing a master reset using the hardware keys.

If your phone is able to charge, try to perform a master reset with the hardware keys. A master reset will restore the original factory settings and wipes out your personal data stored on the internal memory of your phone. All your downloads, ringtones, images, apps, contacts, and Visual Voicemail will be erased in the process. Considering that the problem is triggered by a software bug affecting your LG V30’s system functions, a full system reset will be able to eliminate the bug as well. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Back up all your data on the internal memory (if possible).
  2. With your device powered off, press and hold the Power button and Volume Down buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  3. When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while keep holding the Volume Down button.
  4. Let go of the buttons when the onscreen menu appears.
  5. When you see the option to Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings message prompt, press the Volume Down button to highlight Yes.
  6. Then press the Power button to reset the device.

Wait until the reset is complete then reboot your device. If it’s able to boot up successfully, proceed with the initial setup.

Fourth method: Plug your LG V30 in to a computer

LG Bridge is the new PC suite software for LG Android smartphones like LG V30. It works the same way as iTunes does on an iPhone and iPad, when accessing and managing iOS device system.

LG Bridge is mainly used to backup and restore LG phone data, sync data, update software and other related tasks. In order to use this app, you’ll need to download the LG Bridge installer from LG Support site then install it on your computer (Windows or Mac).

After the LG Bridge software is successfully installed on your computer, try to detect or access the LG V30 phone system through LG Bridge with these steps:

  1. Connect your LG V30 to your computer using the USB cable that comes with your device.  Alternatively, you may use the cable attached to your LG charger. Be sure to unlock your LG V30 when you connect it to your computer.
  2. Once connected, select a USB connection type like Media sync (MTP) or File Transfer, if you’re prompted on your device.
  3. Then, open LG Bridge on your computer.
  4. Select LG Backup to create a backup of your data stored on the phone.

If you wish to restore, follow the onscreen instructions on the LG Bridge menu to restore your device. Basically if your able to access your phone on the computer through LG Bridge software, it means that your phone is not dead. More likely, it’s just not charging so you’ll have to deal with charging problem instead.

If none of these methods is able to fix the problem and that your LG V30 remains stuck on black screen or showing nothing but a blank display, then it’s very likely that what you’re dealing with is a hardware problem. Unfortunately, there’s nothing more you can do on your end to fix a damaged hardware on your phone. This therefore denotes a need for you to take your device to a service center for hardware assessment and repair. Your phone has to be diagnosed by a technician.

Meanwhile, if you are certain that it’s not a hardware issue (given that what you have is a new phone), then you may attempt to reach LG Support to escalate the problem and seek further assistance and recommendations. If nothing works, then you may have to avail for warranty instead. Ask your carrier for more information on how to avail for a unit replacement with your warranty.
