Accessing Old Messages after Message+ Discontinuation on Your Device
Accessing Old Messages After Message+ Discontinuation on Your Device
Verizon's decision to discontinue its Message+ app, effective around June 2024, has left many users wondering how they will access their old messages and continue their messaging services. Here are the key details and steps to help you navigate this transition.
Discontinuation of Message+ App
Verizon has announced that it will start shutting down the Message+ app in June 2024. Once the app is fully shut down, users will no longer be able to use it to send and receive messages.
Impact on Messaging Services
- Web Client Access: The ability to send and receive text messages on Verizon’s website was discontinued as of December 11, 2023. Although this feature is no longer available, your message history will remain accessible.
- Mobile and Desktop Apps: Users can continue to use the Android and iOS versions of Message+ on mobile devices and the Mac desktop version until the full shutdown. However, these apps will eventually cease to function for sending and receiving messages.
Transition to Google Messages
Verizon recommends switching to Google Messages, especially for Android users, before the Message+ app is fully shut down. Here’s how you can make the transition:
- Downloading Google Messages: Android users can download Google Messages directly from the Google Play Store if it is not already installed on their device.
- Setting Up Google Messages: When you open Google Messages, it will prompt you to set it as the default SMS app. By doing so, your existing message history should import automatically into the new app.
Accessing Old Messages
- Automatic Import: When you set Google Messages as your default SMS app, your message history from Message+ should transfer over automatically. However, some users have reported issues with the organization of their message history, with conversations becoming jumbled or mixed up.
- Retaining Message History: Despite the shutdown, your message history will remain accessible through the new app. If you encounter any issues with the import process, you may need to manually organize your conversations.
Additional Features and Considerations
- Auto-Reply and Group Messaging: Some users have highlighted specific features of Message+, such as the auto-reply function and enhanced group messaging capabilities, which may not be fully replicated in Google Messages. Users will need to adjust to the new app's features and limitations.
- WiFi Messaging: Message+ allowed users to send messages over WiFi, even in airplane mode. While Google Messages also supports WiFi messaging, users need to ensure they have WiFi calling enabled to maintain this functionality.
Notifications and Group Texts
During the transition period, users may receive notifications indicating that their number has “left the group” with a 588 area code. These notifications are part of the system maintenance and do not require any action from the user.
By following these steps and recommendations, users can ensure a relatively smooth transition from Verizon's Message+ to Google Messages, preserving their message history and continuing their messaging services without significant disruption.
I just disabled Message+ and rolled the app back to factory, and went back to the Samsung Message app set as default. Everything is there, just lost the bells & whistles of Message+
Will future texts transition from Verizon messaging to Google’s? I see it appears history will transition but no mention of future texts. Thanks
I agree with the above comment. Goggle wants to keep track on us. We will not have any rights in the future. Obamma has set this in motion. Haven’t you noticed the world changing for the worse since he was elected. He has had 4 terns through others to change our world. He has challenged our constitution and lied to the American people. He is a Muslim and is gay. The two lies don’t just change our world but identifies the character of a man.
total garbage, leaving verizon
I tried the migration and discovered that photos and images that were part of my stored conversations DID NOT migrate. This is a big show-stopper. The Samsung messaging app DID migrate everything properly. I was able to recover everything by setting Samsung back as the default messaging app. Additionally, during the period of time that I tried the Google Message app, I discovered every time I tried to send a text message, I was bombarded (in true Google fashion) with unwanted ads and other apps to download. A total pain in the rear end! Does anyone have some sort of fix to overcome these issues? Please don’t respond with any political BS (such as above) as I’m not interested in conspiracy theories and other assorted lies. Thanks in advance.
Conmanduhh-N-Cheat #45, aka cheetojesus worshipers like this one that left the same comment from different profiles have seriously and dangerously lost their effing minds. When he dies soon behind bars, you should do the world a huge favor and drink some more kool-aid, inject bleach like your cult leader suggested and follow him to heII. That, or seek a cult deprogramming therapist and sign up for the 52 week program. If you idiots would stop voting for republiklans against your own best interests, you probably could get help paying for it. For that to happen though, unfortunately you’ll need to escape from your cult. So the bleach might be the only feasible option for you.
Not sure what the messenger + app is. Is it separate from regular text messages?

How come nobody is taking about the fact that switching to Google app isn’t the only option? Why are you all trying to get everyone to switch to Google apps from Verizon messenger? WHY? GOOGLE is taking over everything. They are in schools with Google classroom. Google controls internet. They want to read our emails. Google maps….they fly over our homes taking pics of where we live. Our license plates. Our homes, our swimming pools, etc…They are too involved this is really really really CREEPY. Like something out of horror movie, but it’s real. These freaks who run this are people like Georgo Soros son who hates America. Ponder that for a second. Don’t be stupid people. Do your research. Dig. Dig deep. Now they want Verizon’s app to switch to GOOGLE so they can have all that info. THEY WANT TOTAL CONTROL. WHO IS RUNNING GOOGLE?????? Look deeply. This is really creepy. But of course we are told it’s all for good…to make our lives easier as we are giving away our freedoms and privacy.
