What to do if your Samsung Galaxy A40 keeps rebooting randomly

Troubleshooting Galaxy A40 that keeps rebooting

If you’re an owner of a phone that keeps rebooting, the first thing you have to do is make sure that the phone has not suffered a drop on a hard surface or got submerged in water because if this is due to either physical or liquid damage, the best thing you can do is bring the phone to a tech. But assuming that this occurred without apparent reason or cause, then here’s what you need to do about it…

First solution: Run your phone in safe mode

Running your phone in safe mode will temporarily disable all third-party applications. We need to find out if there are apps that cause the phone to reboot. So, follow these steps to restart the phone: 

  1. Press and hold the Power key until options show. 
  2. Tap and hold the Power off option until it changes into Safe Mode. 
  3. Tap the Safe mode icon to restart your device.
  4. Once the reboot is successful, you should see ‘Safe mode’ at the lower-left corner of the screen. 

While in safe mode, continue using your phone like you always do to see if it still keeps rebooting. If the problem doesn’t occur, then it means that there really is an app that triggers the reboots. Here’s what you should do next: 

  1. Restart your phone normal to boot into standard mode. 
  2. Remember the apps you installed about the time when the phone starts to reboot by itself. 
  3. Once you already have an app in mind, swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down. 
  4. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner. 
  5. Scroll to and then tap Apps. 
  6. Find and tap suspected app. 
  7. Tap Storage. 
  8. Touch Clear data and tap OK to confirm.
  9. Tap the back key once and then touch Uninstall. 
  10. Confirm that you want to remove the app from your phone. 

On the other hand, your phone still keeps rebooting even in safe mode, then move on to the next solution. 

Second solution: Wipe the cache partition of your phone that keeps rebooting

I personally encountered this problem before and fixed it by simply deleting the system cache. It’s because there are times when the cache gets corrupted or becomes obsolete, especially after a firmware update. The system cache needs to be deleted from time to time so that it will be replaced with a new one. You can do just that and possibly fix this problem by wiping the cache partition. Here’s how you do that: 

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy A40 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A40 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step. 
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once your phone has successfully rebooted, try using it like you always do and see if it still keeps rebooting. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Master reset your phone that keeps rebooting

At this point, a master reset is needed. This could be just a firmware issue and a reset can fix it. However, don’t forget to create a backup of your important files and data, especially the ones that are saved in your phone’s internal storage. Once you’re done backing up your files, follow these steps to remove your Google account. It’s necessary to prevent the phone from locking you out after the reset: 

  1. From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Tap Accounts and backup.
  4. Tap Accounts.
  5. Select the appropriate Gmail address. If there are multiple accounts, make sure to pick the one you want to remove from the device.
  6. Tap Remove account.
  7. To confirm, review the notification then tap Remove account.
  8. Restart your phone to refresh the memory.

And then, follow these steps to perform the Master Reset: 

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy A40 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A40 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step. 
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After the reset, set up your phone as a new device and don’t install anything yet. Instead, use the phone and observe to see if it still keeps rebooting because if it still does, then it’s time to bring it back to the store or your local shop and have a tech take a look at it as it could be an issue with the hardware or even the battery.
