What to do if your Garmin Vivosmart 4 isn’t updating its firmware

The most common reason your Garmin Vivosmart 4 won’t update its firmware is a broken Bluetooth connection between the tracker and the Garmin Connect app. A simple restart of both devices fixes the problem for most users. If that doesn’t work, updating through Garmin Express on a computer — or doing a full factory reset — almost always does.

This guide covers every fix in order of complexity, starting with the quickest and working up to the nuclear options. As of 2026, the Vivosmart 4 still receives firmware support from Garmin, and the latest version (5.40 as of this writing) is available through both the mobile app and the desktop software.

Before You Start: Check Your Current Firmware Version

Before troubleshooting, verify what firmware version you’re on so you know whether an update is actually available:

  1. On your Vivosmart 4, press the button to open the menu
  2. Swipe to SettingsAbout
  3. Note the software version displayed on screen

You can also check from the Garmin Connect app: go to your device list, tap the Vivosmart 4, then tap Device Info. If the version shown matches the latest available, your firmware is already current and no action is needed.

Fix 1: Restart Both Devices (Solves 80% of Cases)

Most firmware update failures are caused by a temporary Bluetooth dropout or a hung app process. A clean restart of both devices resolves this without any data loss.

On your smartphone:

  • Android: Hold the power button → tap Restart
  • iPhone: Hold the side button + volume button → slide to power off, then power back on

On your Vivosmart 4:

The Vivosmart 4 doesn’t have a standard power button. To reboot the tracker:

  1. Connect it to its charging clip
  2. Plug the clip into your computer’s USB port — this effectively performs a soft restart of the firmware stack
  3. Leave it connected for 30 seconds, then unplug

Once both devices are back up, open Garmin Connect and navigate to MoreGarmin Devices → select your Vivosmart 4 → Sync. If a firmware update is pending, it will begin automatically within 60 seconds.

Fix 2: Update Through Garmin Connect Mobile

This is the standard wireless update path and works for most users:

  1. Open Garmin Connect on your phone (update the app itself first if it’s outdated)
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and your phone is within 3 feet of the tracker
  3. Tap the More tab (bottom right) → Garmin Devices → select your Vivosmart 4
  4. Tap the sync icon or wait — Garmin Connect checks for firmware updates automatically during each sync
  5. When the update is found, a notification appears: “Software Update Available” — tap Update
  6. Keep your phone near the tracker and don’t use the Vivosmart 4 during the update (the screen dims and shows a progress indicator)
  7. The device restarts automatically when the update completes

Important: Firmware updates are sent to the device in chunks. If the update appears to stall at a percentage, wait at least 15 minutes before assuming it failed — large updates can take that long over Bluetooth.

If you don’t see an update option, toggle Bluetooth off and back on, then force-close and reopen the Garmin Connect app before syncing again.

Fix 3: Update via Garmin Express (PC or Mac)

Garmin Express is the most reliable update method because it transfers firmware directly via USB at full speed, bypassing Bluetooth entirely. Use this if wireless updates keep failing.

  1. Download Garmin Express from garmin.com/express (available for Windows and macOS — approximately 90 MB)
  2. Install and open Garmin Express
  3. Connect your Vivosmart 4 to your computer using its proprietary charging clip cable — the clip snaps onto the back of the tracker’s contacts
  4. Garmin Express will detect the device within a few seconds and prompt you to Add Device
  5. Sign in with your Garmin Connect account (required)
  6. Garmin Express will display any available firmware update — click Install All
  7. Do not disconnect the tracker until the installation completes and Garmin Express confirms success

The Vivosmart 4 appears as a removable storage device when connected via USB, which is important for the next fix.

Tip: If Garmin Express doesn’t recognize your device, try a different USB port (preferably USB 2.0 directly on the computer, not through a hub) and make sure you’re using the original Garmin charging clip cable, not a cheap knockoff.

Fix 4: Delete the Firmware Cache Files via USB (Advanced)

This community-sourced fix resolves a specific situation where the tracker is stuck on an old firmware version (commonly reported as stuck at 2.8 or 3.x) and Garmin Express shows no updates available even though newer versions exist. Deleting the cached files on the device forces Garmin Express to push a fresh copy.

Warning: This process removes activity data and system cache files from the device. Back up your data in Garmin Connect first.

  1. Connect your Vivosmart 4 to your computer via the charging clip
  2. Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) — the Vivosmart 4 appears as a USB drive named GARMIN or VIVOSMART4
  3. Open the drive and look for the /GARMIN/REMOTESW/ folder — this contains cached firmware packages
  4. Delete the contents of the REMOTESW folder (delete the files, not the folder itself)
  5. Safely eject the device
  6. Reopen Garmin Express — it will now re-download and push the latest firmware

This is the fix that works when all else fails and Garmin Express appears to think the tracker is already up to date.

Fix 5: Factory Reset Your Vivosmart 4

If firmware updates consistently fail and the USB method above doesn’t help, a factory reset clears corrupted data that may be blocking the update process. You will lose activity history stored on the device (your Garmin Connect account retains anything already synced).

To factory reset from the device menu:

  1. Press the button on your Vivosmart 4 to open the menu
  2. Swipe to SettingsSystemReset
  3. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings for a full wipe (use this option when troubleshooting a persistent firmware issue)
  4. Confirm your selection

After the reset, the Vivosmart 4 restarts in pairing mode. Re-pair it with the Garmin Connect app:

  1. Delete the Garmin Connect app from your phone, then reinstall it fresh
  2. On your phone, go to SettingsBluetooth → find your Vivosmart 4 → tap Forget This Device
  3. Reboot your phone
  4. Open Garmin Connect → MoreGarmin Devices → tap the + icon
  5. Select Health & Fitnessvivosmart → follow the on-screen pairing prompts

Once re-paired, Garmin Connect will push any available firmware update automatically during the first sync.

Replacement Charging Cables

A faulty or worn-out charging clip is a hidden cause of update failures — if the clip contacts don’t seat properly, the computer can’t read the device as a USB drive and Garmin Express can’t communicate with it. Check the contacts for corrosion (green tinge or white residue) and replace the clip if needed.

Amazon listings change frequently. Confirm availability and compatibility before purchasing.

When to Contact Garmin Support

If you’ve tried all five fixes above and the Vivosmart 4 still won’t update — or if Garmin Express returns a persistent error like “Software Upload Failed” after multiple attempts — the issue is likely a hardware problem with the device’s internal storage. Garmin support can issue a warranty repair or replacement in some cases.

Garmin Fitness Device Support (US):

  • Phone: 1-800-800-1020
  • Hours: Monday–Thursday 8 AM–6 PM CST, Friday 8 AM–5 PM CST
  • Online: support.garmin.com

The Vivosmart 4 carries a one-year limited warranty from date of purchase. When contacting support, have your device serial number ready (visible in Settings → About on the device) and be prepared to describe which update methods you’ve already attempted.
