Note 4 Voice Keeps Breaking During Calls

Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, whenever I make a phone call people tell me that my voice keeps breaking ( although I have great reception ) it’s not a microphone problem since I use tango and other apps with no issues. Do you happen to have an idea about this problem.

Solution: There are several factors involved that can affect the quality of a call. First is the signal reception. Since you mentioned that you are getting a good reception then we can eliminate this as a possible cause to the problem. Second, you should also consider the network mode used by your phone when making calls.  There are four modes that you can choose namely LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA only or GSM only. Try to test making a call for each mode and see which one gives the best result. Your phone may give the best call quality without your voice breaking when using the LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) but not on the GSM only setting. This is what you need to find out.

Once you have eliminated the network mode as the cause of the problem the next step is to check if this is an area related issue. Sometimes you may be able to make a call in your office without any problems but when you arrive home the call problem exists. You should also check if this is what is happening with your phone. If this happens to be the cause of the problem you should contact your network provider regarding this matter.

In some cases the problem could be with the phone software. One prime suspect is corrupt data. If this is the case you should try wiping the cache partition of your phone and check if the problem still occurs.

Note 4 Can’t Be Heard During Incoming Calls

Problem: Many times while receiving incoming call I can hear other side voice but caller can’t hear my voice. Secondly, outgoing calls working absolutely fine their is no issue. Issue is during incoming call only.

Solution: This is indeed a strange problem. The issue only occurs when you get an incoming call but not when you make an outgoing call. I suggest you check first if a third party app is causing this problem by starting your phone in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode have someone call you then check if you can be heard. If the problem does not occur in this mode then it may be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If however the issue still persists even in Safe Mode then I suggest you wipe the cache partition of your phone. Finally, if that does not fix the problem you should backup your phone data and do a factory reset.

Note 4 Can’t Be Heard During Calls

Problem: I have trouble with phone calls. I can hear the caller but the caller can’t hear me quite often. When this occurs and I place it on speaker phone and it works. It was checked out and it is not the ear piece. I got a new note 4 and I had the same issue, they replaced the sim card and I still have the same issue. At one point I uninstalled digical calendar app and phone worked fine now it is happening again. Do you have any suggestions on how correct this issue?

Solution: You should first check if the microphone of your phone is working properly. To do this open your phone’s voice recording app and record a voice clip. Playback the file and check if you can hear anything. If you can’t hear anything or if the sound is faint even if the volume is set to the maximum level then the microphone of your phone may have a problem. You will have to bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking and repair.

If however you can hear the sound clearly from the voice clip then the microphone of your phone is working fine.

You should then proceed by checking the network. Does this issue happen in one particular area? Or does the issue occur in any area? If it’s only in one particular area then there may be some network problems in the area.

Try to check the call quality when using different network  modes and see which one gives the best result. The modes that you can choose are LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA only or GSM only.

One last troubleshooting step that you can do is to backup your phone data and do a factory reset. This eliminates any software related problems that may be causing this issue.

Note 4 Call Can’t Be Heard

Problem: I use my phone for work so when we forward the office number to our mobiles (there are 3 of us all using the same type handsets) but when I forward the calls directly to my mobile, the handset is not ringing, yet the calls are diverting to the other 2 handsets as they are forwarded in a loop to each other when we are on the phone. This does not happen with any of the other handsets only mine. This is only intermittent & sometimes does ring, but another intermittent fault is when the phone does ring, when I answer the call, I can’t hear the caller & they can’t hear me, I sometimes have to cut them off several times before I can hear the caller

Solution: Since this problem occurs intermittently then it is very likely caused by a software glitch. You should first wipe the cache partition of your phone and check if the issue still occurs. If it still does then the next step is to check if a certain third party app installed in your phone is causing the problem. To check on this you will have to start your phone in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode check if the issue still persists. If it doesn’t then it is very likely caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If however the same issue occurs even in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Note 4 Screen Turns Black When Call Is Answered

Problem: Hi, each time i want to make outgoing calls the screen will turn black despite the receiver had answered the calls

Solution: The component responsible for turning the display off when during call is the proximity sensor. Once it detects an object near it ( such as your face) it turns off the display to save on battery power. When the sensor does not detect an object near it ( such as when the call ends and you hold the phone in your hand) the display should automatically turn on. In your case this isn’t happening.

What you should check first is if there is any dirt covering the sensor which you should clean off. Another possible cause is the presence of a screen protector. If our phone has one then you should try taking it off.

There are also cases where a phone lag causes your display to turn on very late. To check if this is what’s happening with your phone you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

  4. Thank you for this site. I thought my issue was my speaker but now I know it’s the microphone. I am going to try to fix myself. : )

  5. My Samsung Note 4 began having increased problems with voice call quality with the update to Android 5.0. People kept telling me I was cutting out even though their voice *never* cut out. My signal strength was marginal so I suspected it was a potential factor but it was still odd that the problem was one-sided and that it got dramatically worse with android 5.0. After trying lots of things (including many noted above), I had Verizon replace the SIM card. I’m happy to report the problem is now resolved.
