Fix TCL Tv Black Screen

There are several factors that can cause black screen problem on your TCL TV ranging from faulty HDMI cable, issues with TV’s backlight, or a software related issue.

Power Cycle TCL TV

The very first thing that you need to do when trying to fix the black screen issue is to simply power cycle the tv. Power cycling is the process of unplugging the tv from the outlet (power source) for a few minutes and then plugging the TV again to its power source or outlet.

Power cycle has been proven to have fixed most issues that may have cause the screen to turn black on your TCL TV.

Here’s how to power cycle TCL TV:

  1. Make sure TV is completely turned off. Unplug the power cord of TV from power outlet.
  2. Wait for at least 1-2 minutes.
  3. Plug the power cord of TV to power outlet.

Turn on TCL tv and check if the TV screen still appears black.

Aside from power cycling the tv, you might to power cycle TCL TV remote as well, to do this:

  1. Remove the batteries on TCL remote control.
  2. After 2 minutes, insert the batteries again to the remote control.

Power Reset TCL TV

If power cycling does not work and then black screen still appears on your TV, you might want to reset your TCL TV.

To do this:

  1. Make sure TV is completely turned off. Unplug the power cord of TV from power outlet.
  2. Locate the reset button, a small hole usually located at the side of the TV. The hole is so tiny that only a paperclip will fit right through it. (Hence, you will be needing a paperclip for this procedure or any sharp pointed object).
  3. Using the paperclip, press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug TV again and then turn it on.

Restart TCL TV using its remote control

This solution will only apply to TCL Roku TVs. Restarting involves key combination on the remote in correct sequence.

To do this:

  1. On TCL Roku TV remote, press the home button for 5 times.
  2. Press UP button once
  3. Press Rewind button twice
  4. Press Fast forward button thrice

Once the sequence has been correctly performed, TCL Roku tv will automatically restart. Once TV completely reboots, check if TCL Roku tv screen still appears black.

Check the Cable Connections

It was mentioned earlier that HDMI cables can also be culprit for the black screen issue on your TCL TV. It can either be a loose HDMI cable or a faulty cable. To determine if the cable connection is the culprit, you can the cables connected to the TCL tv located at the back.

If you have any devices such as Roku and Firestick devices connected to your TV using the HMDI ports, make sure that all connections are tight and not loose. To be safe, you can check and somehow fix by unplugging the cable and then securely plugging it back.

A bad HDMI connection can be any of the following: Loose HDMI connection, Bad HDMI cable and a faulty HDMI port.

If secured connection is confirmed, the next thing you need to do is to check whether the correct input channel is used. You can do this by simply looking at the back of the TV and locate the HDMI port. Most of the time, TVs with two or more HDMI ports have a label for each port so that it can easily be identified. In order to go the to the correct channel input, click on the Source button of TCV TV remote (other buttons have INPUT button). Then simply press on the Source/Input button until the correct input channel is chosen.

Check TCL TV Backlight

If there is no picture on the screen or if you see a black screen even if the TV is ON, it is highly possible to be caused by a faulty LED power strip on the tv’s backlight.

To fix this, try the following steps below:

  1. Using a flashlight, shine it close to the TV’s screen. Make sure the TV is ON while you are doing this (status lights are still ON). Although it is advisable to turn the lights of your room OFF.
  2. A dim image on the TV suggests that TCL screen is perfectly working.

Another solution is using the remote control to check if the TV will respond to the commands pressed on the remote control’s buttons such as the volume key and the input keys as well.

If the TCL LED backlight strips are damaged or faulty, the entire LED strips of the tv will not work. There are backlight LED strips that you can order however make sure to purchase that fits your TV model. Replacing LED backlight strips is not that easy and requires professional hands, therefore it is recommended to have an authorized TCL technician replace it for you.

Update TCL TV firmware

An outdated firmware on TCL TVs can cause minor bugs and glitches that may have cause black screen to appear on the screen. It is advisable to always update the firmware of your TV that can help in removing bugs and issues.

Most TVs especially Android Tv’s, updating the software also means updating its firmware as well.

Here’s how to update TCL Android TVs:

  1. On TCL tv remote control, press the home button
  2. Go to Settings menu.
  3. Select More settings from the settings menu
  4. Select Device preferences
  5. Select About option.
  6. Select Network Update option.
  7. TCL TV will search for available updates. Download the update if there is an update available.
  8. Click OK to confirm once update process is complete.

Enable or Disable Fast Start option

There have been reports from TCL TV users that simply disabling and or enabling fast startup option.

Enabling or Disabling Fast option with TCL Roku TV:

  1. On Roku TV remote control, press the home button
  2. Select Settings menu
  3. Select System
  4. Select Fast TV Start option.
  5. Disable or Enable Fast TV Start option

Enabling or Disabling Fast option on TCL Android TV:

  1. On Roku TV remote control, press the home button
  2. Select Settings menu
  3. Select Power
  4. Change Instant Power ON settings.

Restart TCL TV. Once computer completely reboots, check if black screen problem still occurs.

Replace TV hardware

If TCL TV black screen still persist, there may be hardware issue that’s causing it. One of Tv’s components that’s commonly causing this problem is the TV’s power supply board. It functions by supplying power to the television. If the board is damaged, you may need to replace it with a new one. Note: Board replacement differs with TCL models, please refer to your TV model accordingly.
