S9 Screen Randomly Turns On

Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy S9. Recently over the past week, my phone’s battery life has been getting shorter and it’s been getting hot while in my pocket. Turns out, the screen is turning on for no apparent reason and it turns on every few seconds. This has been causing the phone to get hot and run the battery down. I did a soft reset, took it to the AT&T store where they hooked it up to a diagnostic machine and found no hardware issues. The guy there thinks it’s an issue from the latest OS update. I am currently on Android version 8.0 and there are no updates available. I turned my phone off and left it on the charger all night. It was cool and full in the morning but once it turned on, the screen is turning on frequently again and my battery drained 10 % in half hour. I need help!

Solution: The first thing that you will need to do in this case is to check if an app you installed is causing the problem. To do this you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone runs in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run making it easier to isolate the downloaded apps. If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

In case the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then you will have to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet instead you should check first if the issue still occurs.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you will have to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

S9 No Software Update Available

Problem: Hi despite living in the UK I have recently bought a new Samsung S9  from the US, it is an AT&T branded model and works absolutely fine with my UK carrier and I’m extremely happy with it. However the phone tells me that there is no software upgrade available  and I know that there is one available. I am extremely non-technical and word searches rooting flashing Smart Switch and keys are totally alien to me. I wonder if you can help me or perhaps send me a link that will assist me in upgrading my phone to the latest operating system. My biggest fear is, (as it took me about 4 hours to change all the contacts  data and other information for my last phone to this phone), that somehow a backup might leave me a little Bare when I have set everything from maps to passwords to whatsapp on my phone! I do hope you can help.

Solution: The reason why you are not getting any updates is because the phone can’t access the AT&T update servers. One of the factors causing this issue is because the phone is now running on a different carrier. To update your phone software I suggest that you use Smart Switch.

  • Download and install Samsung Smart Switch that is compatible with your computer
  • Connect the USB cable to a compatible USB port on your computer.
  • Connect the other end of the cable to your phone.
  • Allow your computer to install any required drivers for your device. This process may take a few minutes
  • Open Smart Switch on your computer, and allow it to make the connection.
  • If a software update is available for your device, Smart Switch will automatically prompt you to update. At any time, you can click Update.
  • Click Update to begin downloading the necessary files.
  • Click OK to proceed.
  • Your device may turn off and on a few times during the update process.
  • Once complete the device will return to the Home screen.

S9 Keeps Turning On And Off

Problem: Dear Someone, I am writing from France, about a Samsung S9. I am having trouble with the phone, which is less than 1 month old. It suddenly stopped this morning, with full battery, and never wanted to power on again. I tried the “Volume plus + Home + Power Button”, did not work. I plugged in the phone to charge it, redid the manipulation, and the phone turned on to what appears to be (following on comments on the internet), the Recovery Menu. I tried to “Reboot system now” > home screen “SAMSUNG” is on, and a blue screen pops up, mentioning “Installing system update” and next appears a warning sign, with a dead android and “no command”. I then tried “Factory reset” > the phone wouldn’t shut off, kept the home screen to appear and then black screen/home screen… etc. I plugged off the device from the charger, and the device went immediately off, as if it has no battery at all. I replugged in the device, I did the “Volume plus + Home + Power Button”: again appears mention of “Installing system update” and next appears a warning sign, with a dead android and “no command”. I then did “Reboot system now”. IT WORKED. The phone went off and on, and appears the screen to open the PIN code. BUT NOW, the problem is the phone won’t stop turning off and on again and again and again… without me doing anything. And if I ever deplug it from the charger, it does not work AT ALL. Which is a major issue… I thank you in advance for your possible help and time.

Solution: This problem is most likely caused by a hardware component that is failing to work properly. The best thing that you can do right now is to start the phone in recovery mode then do a factory reset. Take note that the reset will erase your phone data. If the issue still persists then you will have to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
