Samsung Galaxy S7 started popping up “Unfortunately, Chrome has stopped” after Nougat update [Troubleshooting Guide]

Your Samsung Galaxy S7 has a built-in web browser called “Internet” but Google mandated every Android phone maker to have Chrome pre-installed on every device as part of the agreement. So, basically, you already have two built-in web browsers on your phone. Compared with other browsers for Android, I prefer to use the latter and I think many Android users do so, too.

Samsung Galaxy S7 chrome app

The thing with being pre-installed is that, the app is deeply rooted to the firmware that whenever it crashes, we can be able to say that the problem is with the firmware. However, there have been cases wherein pre-installed apps crash due to some third-party apps. So, we really can’t be sure or pinpoint the culprit that causes the Chrome to crash. That’s what we’re going to find out in this post. We will also try to do something that might just fix the problem. Continue reading to understand why this problem occurs and what needs to be done to fix it.

Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 that’s showing “Unfortunately, Chrome has stopped” error

We will try to troubleshoot your phone to know why it started showing up the error message shortly after it was updated to Nougat. We will also try to look into the possibilities and rule them out one by one so as to know what needs to be done to get rid of it. That said, here’s what you have to do to troubleshoot…

Step 1: Clear the cache and data of Chrome

This will immediately reset the app back to its factory default settings as well as delete possibly corrupt caches and system files. You may lose your browsing history as well as cookies and caches that were saved by the browser on your phone but it has a high probability of fixing the problem. I suggest this is the first thing you should do in this case so as to deal with the problem head on–the rule of thumb is to go after the app that’s mentioned in error.

  1. From Home screen, tap App icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications and Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and tap Chrome.
  6. Touch the Force Close button first.
  7. Tap storage.
  8. Tap Clear cache and Clear data, Delete.

After doing this procedure, open Chrome and try to browse any website just to test if the error still shows up and if so, then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Determine if the problem is caused by a third-party apps or not

Again, we’ve seen cases where third-party apps cause built-in ones to crash. So, we still need to rule this possibility out and we can do so by booting the phone up in safe mode. In so doing, you are temporarily disabling all third-party apps. If one of them is causing the problem, then you should be able to use Chrome in safe mode without being greeted by the error.

Booting up in safe mode alone doesn’t fix the problem but it’s important you do it just to know what the problem really is all about. Oftentimes, knowing what the cause is is the key to solving the problem. So, assuming the problem doesn’t occur in this mode, the next thing you should do is find the app that’s causing it and uninstall it. After all, third-party apps can be freely uninstalled and reinstalled at will. Here’s how you start your S7 up in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. When Samsung Galaxy S7 logo appears, release the Power key and immediately hold the volume down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down key until it finishes its rebooting.
  4. When “Safe mode” appears on the screen immediately release the Volume Down key.

To uninstall an app, follow the procedure in first step but hit uninstall instead of clearing the cache and data.

Step 3: Delete system caches so they’ll be replaced with new ones

Considering the fact that the error started to show up after the Nougat update, it’s also possible that some caches got corrupted during the update and those files are still being used by the new firmware. Obsolete and corrupt data always results to performance related problems including app crashes that’s why it’s necessary to delete all of them so they’ll be replaced. You can do so by booting your phone up in recovery mode and wiping the cache partition:

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Open the app after doing this to see if the error still shows up and if so, then move on to the next step.

Step 4: Perform master reset on your phone to bring it back to factory defaults

It’s now time to just reset the phone to know if the problem has something to do with some system files that got corrupted or misconfiguration. However, you will lose all your personal files and data when you reset the device so make sure you create a backup of those important files you don’t want to lose. Then, disable anti-theft feature to make sure you don’t get locked out after the reset, this is how you do it…

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Cloud and accounts.
  4. Tap Accounts.
  5. Tap Google.
  6. Tap your Google ID email address. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
  7. Tap Menu.
  8. Tap Remove account.
  9. Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.

To reset your phone, follow these steps.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

The error message “Unfortunately, Chrome has stopped” is actually a minor problem and a reset can surely fix it. But if it happens the problem remains after the reset, then consult a technician to have the phone checked.
