How to troubleshoot your Galaxy S7 Edge that slowed down after an update

There are several possibilities we have to look into to be able to determine, first of all, why this problem happens and secondly, we have to troubleshoot your device to be able to formulate a solution that might fix this problem for good. That being said, hereā€™s what you need to do:

Step 1: Verify if your downloaded apps have something to do with it

We need to run the phone in diagnostic state so as to know if the problem is caused by by one of your downloaded apps or an issue with the firmware itself. It means that you have to boot your phone up in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps. By doing so, you can tell immediately if third-party party apps have something to do the with problem because the phone will boot up successfully in this mode and may work way faster than its current performance. Hereā€™s how you restart you device in Safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGEā€™ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe modeā€™ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If your S7 Edge is working fine while in this mode, then you need to find the third-party app that might have been causing the problem. You always have an option to disable or uninstall suspected apps but please note that even if an app is disabled, it may still have some services running in the background and may still cause a problem. Therefore, itā€™s recommended you uninstall the app that you think is causing the problem. Hereā€™s how you uninstall an app from your S7 Edge:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch the app in question.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Uninstall.

Uninstalling an app may not fix the problem. You have to boot your phone normally to know if what you did has a good effect on the performance of your device. If the problem remains after uninstalling an app, then uninstall another suspected app by booting your phone up in safe mode again and following the steps above. After which, boot your phone normally again to see if the problem got fixed. Do this process until the problem is fixed.

If, however, you have a lot of apps and donā€™t have time to go after them one by one, then I suggest you just backup your important data and files and then factory reset your phone. The process will delete all files and apps on your phone except system files and pre-installed apps. If the problem was caused by an app then a reset will fix it. Hereā€™s how you do the factory reset:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

You will have to setup your phone from scratch again after the reset.

Step 2: Try deleting all system caches through Recovery Mode

If the problem occurred after an update, then itā€™s possible that the problem is caused by some corrupt caches. It is, therefore, imperative that you try to delete them to rule this possibility out. Booting up your phone into the Recovery Mode and wiping the cache partition may fix this performance-related issue and hereā€™s how you do it:

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.ā€™
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yesā€™ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system nowā€™ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Wiping the cache partition wonā€™t delete any of your files or data but will force the phone to create new caches to replace ones that you just deleted. After the phone has successfully rebooted, you can immediately tell if the issue got fixed and if it wasnā€™t, then the next step may probably fix this problem for good.

Step 3: Backup important data and files and Master Reset your S7 Edge

The next procedure will delete all your files and data so you need to back them up before following the steps below. What this procedure does is bring the phone back to its default settings. This, of course, will rule out the possibility that the problem is caused by some corrupt system files. Itā€™s a very effective troubleshooting method to fix firmware-related issues such as this so if all else fails, then you have to do these steps:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesnā€™t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it wonā€™t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, thatā€™s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The ā€œInstalling system updateā€ message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.ā€™
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes ā€” delete all user dataā€™ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system nowā€™ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
